Arsenal boss Arséne Wenger told popular French radio station RMC on their football talk show ‘After Foot’ that “he hopes” Marseille midfielder Samir Nasri will become an Arsenal player after this summers European Championships.
Wenger, who has come under pressure from the majority of Gunners’ fans to make some signings in the current summer transfer window, is currently on holiday in Italy “relaxing” at a Merano health spa while stand-in Managing Director Ken Friar is left to deal with transfer negotiations.
“Nasri, he interests me,” Wenger told RMC.
“I hope I will do it after the Euros.
“It is more complicated now because the wage differences [between the French and the English league] are not as big as they used to be.
“Just watch [Karim] Benzema. He is 20 and recently signed a new deal.
“It is very difficult [to transfer players from the French league] but England is considered one of the two top leagues and the best players want to play against the best players.”
A £12.5 million deal was reportedly agreed between Marseille and Arsenal last week while the Frenchman was set to have a medical and seal personal terms with the club during the one-day break he had off from the French national team on Monday.
The news that the delayed move will happen after the Euro Championships will certainly put the signing in doubt, with Nasri likely to attract plenty of suitors if he has an impressive tournament for France.

Just hope Marseille don’t try to move the goalposts if he has a great tournament and earns a starting berth later in the finals. I hope its just a case of 99%.

I can only assume therefore that there’s still a difference of opinion over transfer fee or personal terms. Concerning because if it falls through it leaves us very little time to pull off another deal.

If that is true, then it won’t happen. Very disappointing. I think maybe the quote might mean he hopes to see him at Arsenal after the Euros, as that would be the first time he could come and do anything here.
Which means that he signs now, but can only physically come to Arsenal and settle in, after the Euros. Let’s hope, because he has impressed me in both of France’s games, and he’ll be impressing people in the Euros. So if he isn’t signed now, there will be too much competition for his signature afterwards.
If he hasn’t signed by Thursday, then it’s best we forget about this one.

A precise translation of exactly what Wenger said and in what context he said it is needed, he might have meant something different.
Nasri himself has said that he was 99% done, right? So has his agent. That should mean that they’re satisfied with the money, and since his agent said that Arsenals offer was very interesting from a sporting point of view Nasri should also know that Arsenal is the best destination for him to progress.

Well seems we have lost out again. How frustrating, I was quite excited about nasri. I dont believe wages are the only prob though. Wenger seemes to dilly dally a bit with transfers. He would rather miss out then be rushed. He still might sign I suppose. We need 1 or 2 new signings (not as many as some people think) but I hope we dont just end up with replacements. Alright Gooner Chris. It still wouldn’t be an enormous surprise if the signing was announced in he near future. All the information suggests that the player has agreed terms and the stumbling block is between the clubs, if anywhere. If this is the case, the situation could change at any moment. The club also said that all transfers would be sorted by 7th June. Wenger is a world of smoke and mirrors when it comes to transfers.

Ribery was never announced as a done deal and as soon as Bayern Munich offered 18m out of desperation, we were out of the running. At the time he was not worth the money, even though he has been a bargain in retrospect. I really do think that we have to calm down and give Wenger the trust he deserves.

No top team as we are so called, plays around during negotiations like arsenal do, the board really needs to sort out its transfer and contract policies because their stubborness will only backfire because the world of football is advancing and leaving Arsenal behind. Here’s my theory and shoot it down as much as you want but in my mind it’s the logical answer. Nasri has been signed! but it won’t be confirmed till the “New season” as we have that 12mil net spend thing agreed in with the stadium meaning if Wenger announced the signing and paid the funds now all other tranfers he wants to do pre-Euros wouldn’t be able to happen hence he may miss out on players or lose them to inflated prices. With Nasri having a buyout clause thats not an issue so they can choose when the deal goes through.
with the deals from last summer taken into account and a negative net spend it would allow wenger 15-18m to spend pre euros should he wish to rather than 2-5 if he announced the Nasri deal.
Feel free to pick fault but you have to admit it does make sense, and should stop some of theworries out there. 🙂

I dunno Wenger always wants to be low key about everything…its very rarely that he comments on the transfer of a player. If you look at most of the transfer sagas that have gone on this is the first one that Wenger really commented about. Usually when a reporter asks him about a particular transfer target he is usually not to keen about it and tries to discredit it. I guess he wasn’t too happy about the papers making a lot of noise about Nasri to Arsenal saga, so he decided to say so and so player will not sign after the Euros, maybe to drop the excitment. I dunno thats my 5 pence view on it

I do think we will sign Nasri, but if we by some freak nature fail to do so I’m not really that worried. Babel didn’t sign, Ribery didn’t sign etc etc but then out of nowhere Wenger signs players of the calibre of Sagna and Eduardo for virtually nothing and saves our asses. I will be happy with any signing Wenger makes because he always knows best.
Although I have grown quite fond of Nasri 🙂

Yesterday the commentator said it was official that Arsenal had in fact signed him for 17 million,now from all of the stuff I’ve read concerning transfers,a commentator is not allowed to speak so boldly live on air about a team signing a player in that manner,my father is good friends with a FIFA licensed referee (although he doesn’t officiate big important matches since he only got licensed few months ago) he has also said they are not supposed to speak about transfers unless a player has REALLY SIGNED! So something is going on that none of us no about. My advise is…calm down before you blow an artery!

This is all speculation. Wenger is notoriously slippery over transfers, so rather than get excited, sit back and be patient. Why would he set himself up for the fall by stating that he fans should be encouraged by the signings he would make in the next 2/3 weeks. He woudn’t. Si…lots of Big clubs have a down period..usually they splurge with 50+ million pounds or euros just to rebuild the squad so those clubs usually dont have a large transition period. I think the way Wenger is rebuilding, is a lot slower so we fans just have have to be patient. If you look at this year alone I could say that it was successful from the other two years of transition because we made dramatic progress something that made me happy to see. I think Wenger sees how close we were to winning things so he is going to make some slight adjustments in the squad to finally make us go the full 100 percent

Wenger doesn’t personally deal with every aspect of a transfer, so stop persecuting him. Our transfers are normally done fairly well. Spurs got one, I repeat ONE quality signing done and quickly, now everyone’s having a heart attack since we haven’t done the same.

it would have been nice to have the nasri deal wrapped up pre-euro 08, but its not to be. despite AW’s plans to bring players in before the tournament begins, it now looks as if we will have to wait.
I think ppl need a reality check and need to chill out. there is so much time left before the season starts. AW knows how close we got last year and has said exactly what we are missing.

Nasri will still come, he probably wants to concentrate on France at the moment. He knows Wenger will do his career the world of good and Wenger hardly is ever optomistic and never talks about transfer unless hes pretty sure he’ll come. Richard Dunne wouldnt be a bad signing if hes happy not being guaranteed a first team place and the defence is certainly somewhere we need some experience as we make too many mistakes – esp if any of the back four regs are out. i feel let down. arsene is letting me down. big names are connected with our team everyday. we have players saying that they wanna come here (david villa) and we dont even consider acting on them or making an offer of any sort. we have players that are essentially signed for us apparantly (nasri) but we cant seem to meet their demands. we have a player that our coach and manager really are interested and want (ben arfa) and he isnt doing shit to sign them. i mean i love arsene, i have faith in his coaching techniques, and his skill for finding stars, but you gotta sign some big proven stars and names.SPEND SOME CASH. i know we have structures and policies, but if we do it right, we can get any players we want that we know will perform and win us matches. i mean Benzema, dos santos, quaresma, david villa, ben arfa, robinho all are dominant players who have made a name on the stage of football somehow. they might not be team leaders but they know how to play and play arsenal style football. I am sad to say I dont see any signings to IMPROVE our team. i see a few signings to fill in spots that are now left blank (flamini, hleb, eduardo) but we will just buy players to fill them in. they will be unheard of signings, which might turn out to be great, but we cant test this EVERY season.. we are not bolstering or enhancing our team. we are just fixing a ship that slowly seems to be falling apart. we need to sign attacking and direct players. no more hleb/rosicky type who dont drive to the net, we need ben arfa, benzema, villa who want that final shot and score. we missed out last year on torres. we should’ve had him when we gave atletico reyes. we should’ve had a swap with some cash involved, but arsene fucked up and let him go. we should have got players like tevez, bable, torres, ribery, quaresma LAST SEASON. then we would’ve had the finishing we needed this year. SAD TO SAY GUNNERS BUT I SEE ANOTHER 3 CUP-LESS SEASONS COMING UP. manpoo, chelski, and potentially even livercunts will have better and replenished squads. espcially with a few BIG BIG PLAYERS that they will splash cash on to reinforce their teams.

Everyone should calm down. Yes it is very disappointing that we have not wrapped up Nasri but there are probably some legal matters to be dealt with regarding the contract which could not be settled hence waiting until the Euros to sort it out. A year down the road, we are being given another opportunity to sign the former World Player of the Year – this time at a cut-price £15million.
Last time round, I quoted the reasons of rubbing shoulders with Thierry Henry, Gilberto Silva and Cesc Fabregas and running circles around John Terry and Rio Ferdinand. Plus the fact that Ronaldinho was unhappy at Barcelona and unhappy with his teammates.
Why would the Brazilian superstar sign for us this time round? Because now he is leaving Barcelona for sure as relationships have soured beyond repair. In addition, Dino needs to jump-start his career, which has come to a standstill at Barca. He needs to be the star to lead a team that is still very hungry for success. He cannot be joining Chelsea or Manchester United – their style does not suit him.
Ronaldinho can be our leading scorer at the forefront to replace Henry, giving extra power to an excellent strike force. With Emmanuel Adebayor, Aleksandr Hleb and Gilberto vowing to stay, Fabregas steering the wheels in midfield and Kolo Toure and William Gallas marshalling the defence, there is great incentive for Dino to pack his bags to join us at the Emirates. Together, there is a definite chance for Arsenal to win something.
On our part, we need a big star to lead us to titles! We are hungry for success after a few barren years. I think i have got my facts right when i say toure & clichy were around before fabregas & as good as rvp is he has’nt been cosistent enough could be down to injuries but the real truth is he cant get through a whole season even though i really hope he gets over his injury problems.
eduardo looks good so far but we cant shout about him yet can we? as he may not come back to be the player he was turning in to before he got injured & sagna looks good but only 1 season & i hope he continues the way he’s been playing but u cant judge a player on the 1st season..
