This article is not going to be very Arsenal-related, but it’s something that I feel needs to be said, simply because I don’t see anyone else saying it, and that pisses me off.
As you all know, unless you’ve lived in a desolate cave all your life, Joey Barton, the Newcastle midfielder, was imprisoned on May 20. He was sentenced to six months imprisonment for common assault and affray outside a McDonald’s restaurant in Liverpool in December last year. Nothing wrong with that you might say. Well, the peculiar thing is that he only served 74 days of his prison term, being released on July 28. Today.
Throughout his career Barton’s personal life has been riddled with controversy. Besides the McDonald’s incident he broke a pedestrian’s leg with his car at 2 am, he was arrested on suspicion of assault and criminal damage after a dispute with a taxi driver – although he was cleared of this, and on 1 May 2007 he brutally assaulted Ousmano Dabo, his team mate at Manchester City, at their training ground. Dabo stated that he had been hit several times and that he had to go to hospital after suffering injuries to his head.
Now, if an average Joe had commited the very same crimes there is no chance whatsoever that he would be released today. And that is a disgrace. I’m wondering if there is a single Newcastle supporter that honestly, and with good conscience, can sing Barton’s name this forthcoming season, knowing that the legal system considers him to be of more importance as a human being than themselves just because he’s a famous footballer. A rich, white, and famous footballer. Obviously that’s all that matters, because there’s probably hundreds (if not thousands) of identical, violent men in their mid-twenties locked up in prisons all over the country that is not receiving the same lenient treatment simply because they’re nobodies. I bet they, along with their families who will have to do without them, wish they had spent more time playing football as a kid.
Kevin Keegan has expressed his support for Joey and he’s giving him a 2nd (more like 328th) chance to redeem himself and Gordon Taylor, of the Professional Footballers Association, had the following to say:
“We’ve tried to help Joey with the Sporting Chance clinic and to be there to help him when he’s needed it. But you need to see something in return.”
“It’s not been good, it wasn’t a good year, but the lad does have ability and you keep hoping he can put it behind him and move on.”
It seems like to them all is forgiven and that Barton will be back to his extremely overpaid dream job. After all, he just physically abused some people in a brutal fashion even though he’s morally obliged to be setting examples for the kids. His previous relapses proves that he hasn’t shown the slightest hint of regret or a will to redeem himself. And even if he said that he would want to make amends – who would believe him, apart from the faithful supporters who probably believe it just because they want it to be true? How could anyone find a sensible cause to single him out and release him while leaving many, many identical cases untouched?
Imagine if this happened to an Arsenal player – would you want him representing your beloved team? I know I wouldn’t. Let’s take it even further; how would the media react if a foreigner had done the same things? I can assure it would’ve been a manhunt of epic proportions. If it were up to me Barton would not even look at a football pitch, let alone participate in a game, for the rest of his life. But, unfortunately, I’m not the one calling the shots on this one.
We all know that the original punishment was laughably low to begin with, and now this? It’s a sick and twisted world we live in; you’re screwed from the outset unless you’re rich, white and famous. Bloody hell, someone please just shoot me. Or, even better, shoot Joey Barton.

I hate this bloke, i remember when he stupped his cigar out in that reserve Man City player.. He doesn’t deserve to play again IMO. Then again he’d do a great job next to Fabulous, he’s got the premiership experience and experience in general we need… NAAAAAT

Gooner chris have you heard the news that we have made a bid for swiss midfielder inler.
Here’s a link http://www.mailonsunday.co.uk/sport/football/article-1039268/Arsenal-set-pip-Newcastle-race-Swiss-midfielder-Inler-making-5m-bid.html?ITO=1490
What do you thnik about this. Do you beleive it’s true.
July 28, 2008 at 10:08 pm
Yep I think it is true, £5million is a decent price for Inler, he’s a tough tackler and would definitely fill the void left by Mathieu Flamini.
July 28, 2008 at 10:10 pm
did you know the guy gets 55K a week plus bonuses to carry on beating up people
well done Newcastle for supporting a reckless scum not worthy of anybody’s time
July 28, 2008 at 10:10 pm
kevin keegans a mug too for ‘giving him a SECOND chance’. since when is that his second chance. hes the nastiest piece of work ive ever seen since ive watched football (im 22). it disgusting the way he feels he can act and the ruling to let him out at such an early date is a critical failure in the judicial system since it reinforces his belief that he can get away with things and get a lesser sentence than he deserves. keegans actions also do that. idots!

what a scummy basterd come to the arsenal ojaiiiii fak aff
July 28, 2008 at 10:18 pm
Great article. I totally agree with it all – the legal system is a complete disgrace regarding some things, this certainly being one of them. And of course, you’re completely right – it’s because he’s rich, white and famous. Disgraceful. Keegan should bite the bullet and release him immediately.

Inler looks like the one..

Seeing that the average sentence for common assault is about 6 weeks and most are out within two. Also it is pretty rare for anyone to go to prison for common assault, ABH is usually the most minor prisonable offense connected to violence which is above common assault and half even escape prison for that. The way I see it Joey has not been given special privileges for being a footballer he has more been made an example of, in much the same way Tony Adams was. Don’t get me wrong I’m no Barton fan I’m a gooner. I just wish people would get thier facts right before writing useless blogs with no substance, just a waste of time fella.

you forgot to mention Bartons sick stubbing out of a cigar in a youth team players eye at a club xmas party – thus ending the guys career before it even got going. Also all the sick two footed lunges he continuously seems to get away with (but like that cunt Michael Brown there, but thats another story),
Great article though

Kelsey123, I don’t really seem to find the same information you access then, because I cannot find anything that says “most are out within two weeks”, seems more likely that they’d be fined rather than going to prison for a mere 14 days. The fact is that Barton repeatedly beat people up and he was sentenced for 6 months, not 6 weeks, and he didn’t even serve half of that.
It is true that he was charged for “common assault”, but I can’t say that what he did to Dabo was anything less than “assault”: An assault is committed when a person intentionally or recklessly causes another to apprehend the immediate infliction of unlawful force. “Common assault” on the other hand is committed when a person either assaults another person or commits a battery, and that could be like a push – not a beating that required a trip to the hospital.
But I guess we could just agree to disagree and leave it there.
As for Tony Adams, he crashed his car and played with some fire extinguishers and later admitted his wrongs and recovered from his alcoholism, very much unlike Barton. I think it’s an unfair comparison to make.

July 29, 2008 at 3:35 am
55K a week? apparently he is on 65K a week and is getting a raise too
what a tasteless club Newcastle are
July 29, 2008 at 3:45 am
he’s a ignorant thug, and exactly the reason why English football is in the state it’s in today – why would the top teams pay top $ for young English players when they can’t control their behavious? We’ve had our fingers burnt several times before.
Keegan seems to think he’s above any situation (at least until he peremptorily resigns), but this guy should be sacked and refused a registration by the FA. A bit like the deonstration Chelski made of Mutu. Unfortunately, that won’t happen, and football will continue to look after its own, with our money (don’t believe me? look at the management career of one G. Souness).

Justice systems are always like this. They realise the people that do really bad things early, and keep the people that do feck all. jeffery dalhmer ted bundy they all got let go to kill a few more before beening caught now joe barton is on that list!

July 29, 2008 at 4:34 am
wonder what the odds would have been with the bookies in May on Arsenal starting this season with a smaller squad than last year…?
July 29, 2008 at 6:50 am
Not sure about Inler. Looked more like an attacking midfielder than defensive. Certainly behind Diaby in quality I’d say. If we bring someone in it should be someone who offers something different. Barry would provide more balance, also good at set pieces and can slot in at left back where Clichy is suspect defensively.

I find this article particularly ironic as Adebayor once said if he wasn’t a footballer he’d be a gangster and has already been in prison for pushing his mum down the stairs, haha
July 29, 2008 at 9:44 am
This is a really good article, Chris. Good stuff. I think, though, that you’re confusing the difference between being rich, white and famous, and being a good footballer.
There’s no reason why being a convicted criminal should preclude you from being obscenely well-paid to play football. If you’re good enough to earn that money, and your nefarious activities don’t interfere with your performance, you should be allowed to play. The only reason I can see why he shouldn’t be allowed to play is if the Premier League put in a “person of high-repute” clause on the contracts, much like they currently have for owners. But if they do that, half the England squad would likely fail…
That said, it’s always been the case that if you’re rich, famous and white, you’ll rig the system and get the lightest punishment possible. That is a perversion of justice in many respects, least of which is that wealth and influence shouldn’t be factors when a defendant walks into a courtroom. We should all be equal in the eyes of the law.
However, Joey Barton looks like a pumpkin.

forget gareth barry he’s not good enorgh. It’s got so bad this season when adding to the sqaud, everytime we are linked to a player ,i want us to buy.But as everyone knows there’s no point buying just to buy.Last season i was at the emirates cup,and i saw david villa player watching his movement off the ball and his link up play was breath-taking.Like henry you were letf in no doubt about his quality.players in this bracket, ronaldo, torries, cesc my point is barry would’nt even get close enorgh to tie thier boot lace.Wenger would never pay.
July 29, 2008 at 12:05 pm
Another week gone by and still no sighnings, is Wenger taking the piss or what, we were told that he was at the euros spotting talent, more like another fucking junket for this greedy totally overrated excuse for a manager. Fuck off now Wenger you money grabbing tosspot
July 29, 2008 at 12:30 pm
at least he served the 74 days, look at LA, the celebrities there serve up to two days MAX! some getting out after literally minutes.
July 29, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Joey Barton may be rich white and famous but he couldn’t get his brother off a life sentence for a racially motivated axe murder. As our chairman would say – we don’t need his sort.
July 29, 2008 at 3:28 pm
bang on dude, complete disgrace.
how you could have him in your club is beyond me, from a fan or management perspective.
bet he is great for team spirit to.

I live in America and never heard of this person. I also try to avoid football because it is so rough and violent, and usually associated with alcohol.
