Arséne Wenger’s first team begin their pre-season campaign this Saturday with the inaugural trip to north London neighbours Barnet at Underhill.
With the likes of Theo Walcott, Bacary Sagna, Gael Clichy and Gunners new-boy Aaron Ramsey set to start in the friendly match, Arsenal fans will get a chance to watch the new-look squad in action against League 2 opposition.
Gooner Talk have compiled a list of five up and coming first team youngsters likely to make the biggest impact during the 2008/09 season and why they should be feared by the Premier League and Europe’s finest defenders.
5. Theo Walcott – Striker/Winger
At the tender age of 19, Theo Walcott is potentially the biggest English prospect plying his trade at the Emirates Stadium.
Theo has showed mere glimpses of his quality so far at the club, when when these glimpses have come, they have come in enormous bursts.
The starlet’s repuation rocketed when he went on a mazy run, beating over five Liverpool players before squaring to Emmanuel Adebayor who finished with aplomb. That was the Champions League Quarter Final at Anfield, minutes later Kolo Toure conceded a penalty, Steven Gerrard converted and Walcott’s momeny was taken away from him.
Arsenal fans won’t forget that run though and neither will they his pace and agility to set up that goal. It was announced in late June that Walcott would be given the number 14 shirt, last worn by former Arsenal legend and captain Thierry Henry – this could be his year.
4. Nicklas Bendtner – Striker
One of the biggest positives to come out of another trophyless year for Arsenal last season was Nicklas Bendtner. The young Dane took massive strides in a short amount of time and lived up to his ‘goal a game’ reputation by scoring just 10 seconds after coming on against bitter north London rivals Tottenham.
Not only did that goal make him an Arsenal fan’s favourite, but his willingness to get back and defend to help the cause shows his true ’steel’ and character.
Bendtner, 20, has been likened to Inter striker Zlatan Ibrahimović for his superb ability in the air as well as his challenging and unpredictable style which causes most Premier League defenders to panic.
Seven goals in sixteen appearances for his country, Nicklas is one of Europe’s hottest young talents and is consisdered to be the next big thing back in his home land as well as Ashburton Grove.
You can keep up to date with Nicklas’ progress during the season over at Nicklas Bendtner News.
3. Aaron Ramsey – Midfielder
The acuquistion of Welsh teenager Aaron Ramsey was not only an fantastic signing for Arséne Wenger’s men, it might just turn out to be one of the transfer coup’s of the window.
Versatile midfielder Ramsey rejected firm offers from Manchester United and Everton to join the Gunners which meant that most Arsenal fans took to him immediately. Wenger flew him and his family to Switzerland to talk about the plans the ‘Gaffer’ had for him and his potential future with Arsenal.
17-year-old Ramsey is the next big thing in Welsh football and his move to Arsenal will certainly escalate that title and his own footballing career. Under the guidance of Arséne Wenger, young Aaron can be sure of many chances to come this season, hopefully ones which he will take.
Aaron Ramsey News will keep you updated with the starlet’s progress in the Arsenal side this season, don’t forget to check it out if you have a spare minute.
2. Carlos Vela – Striker/Winger
Highly-rated Mexican prodigy Carlos Vela is predominantly a striker but while on loan to Spanish sides Salamanca and Osasuna during the past two seasons, he was used on the left wing, a position where he proved to be tricky and extraordinarily quick.
Arsenal boss Arséne Wenger views Vela as a striker and expects to use him there this season. With Eduardo, Bendtner, van Persie, Walcott and wantaway frontman Emmanuel Adebayor, Arsenal have a strong strike force ready for next season.
When the Gunners released their squad numbers for the new league campaign, Carlos was given the number 12 shirt - previously worn by Pompey fullback Lauren. A certain acheivement for the youngster, and a potential sign that Le Boss has him in his plans for the coming season.
The place to go for all things Carlos Vela is Carlos Vela News, latest news, pics and reports on the Mexican prodigy.
1. Samir Nasri – Central Midfielder/Winger
Marseille-born Nasri can become the best midfielder in Europe, and at the age of just 21 he has plenty of time to show that. In the mould of Cesc Fabregas his technical ability, passing and pace are outstanding.
Speed, skill and pure technique are the main features of his game, Nasri has been drafted in on the right wing for France many times before.
He has been designated the Number 8 shirt for the 08/09 season, formerly worn by Ian Wright and Fredrik Ljungberg, and most recently worn by Lassana Diarra.
I think I speak for most Gooners when I say ‘I can’t wait to see Nasri play’. After seeing him in action for his country, he suits Arsenal’s style perfectly and will be able to blossom under Wenger’s guidance.
Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas are the new faces of Arsenal Football Club and they’re gearing up to set the Premier League alight.

July 14, 2008 at 4:19 pm
Just one mistake, I believe Ramsey is 17 not 19.
Great article tho
July 14, 2008 at 4:19 pm
Im with Theeeeeeeoooo!
Where’s Theeeeeeeeooooo!???
July 14, 2008 at 4:20 pm
Vela is already my vote for player of the season – Just for his comments and his attitude.
July 14, 2008 at 4:23 pm
If these 5 do well, as they should, and Diaby comes on, Arsenal will finally fulfill its potential and win the EPL and CL. Man U CANNOT get much better, with or without Ronaldo. Chelsea should be better, but you always expect that. I believe in this Arsenal team and those who do not think kids can win anything, watch and learn.
July 14, 2008 at 4:24 pm
Are Cesc and Clichy too old to be considered youngsters?
July 14, 2008 at 4:25 pm
r u dum! fran merida????????????????
July 14, 2008 at 4:26 pm
Erm, Theo?
July 14, 2008 at 4:26 pm
Eboue?
July 14, 2008 at 4:27 pm
Theo, ramsey, vela & nasri should be the ones to look out for. even bendtner..
Looking forward to see how some of these youngsters come on..
Still cant see whats so special about song.
July 14, 2008 at 4:30 pm
I wouldn’t mind seeing Diaby replace Flamini. I know he’s seen as an attacking midfielder, but he is quick, strong, good in the tackle, has great stamina and rarely losses the possesion.
July 14, 2008 at 4:30 pm
Ramsey is 17. Change it please.
July 14, 2008 at 4:31 pm
SONG:”Despite the season’s dissappoinment, Song committed himself to the club by signing a new long-term contract in early June”
OH PLEASE!!! Like he’s good enough to go anywere else..
July 14, 2008 at 4:31 pm
Almunia?
July 14, 2008 at 4:31 pm
I vote for Eboue as well
July 14, 2008 at 4:31 pm
i agree with theeeeo, wolcott is gona be a monster this season. but other than that gerat article.
July 14, 2008 at 4:31 pm
Ping Pong – I am younger and better than Eboue.
July 14, 2008 at 4:32 pm
AJ – Almunia is at least 30.
July 14, 2008 at 4:33 pm
haha Ricky.
Cheers guys, yep Ramsey is 17 thanks for the correction.
I was contemplating on whether to put Walcott in but went for Bendtner because of the last season and overall attributes.
July 14, 2008 at 4:35 pm
You should have done a top ten!
July 14, 2008 at 4:41 pm
in my opiun we have the best youth policy in the world,no team on the planet can match us for great youth players,we need a strong defensive midfielder to sit along side fabregas then he will have freedom to rome much more, toure should be captain his heart is in are badge he gives 100% every single game he arsenal thro and thro and i think he gets forgotton he is are best cb by far,we need a goalie as its are weak point or we should just play fabinski and watch him grow or go sign a world class one,its great we have the best talent in the world and its great we plasy the best football in the country if not europe but we need to start pushing for silver wear and i truly believe trhis is are season
July 14, 2008 at 4:42 pm
Best player by far will be Carlos Vela. I’ve seen him and if his heading capabilities are upto scratch, he’ll be as good as Christiano Ronaldo!
July 14, 2008 at 4:42 pm
This blog is a first team blog and covers that side of the squad. If you wanted the likes of Lansbury, Randall, Freeman, visit our good friends over at Young Guns.
July 14, 2008 at 4:45 pm
how about Nordtveit =) ?
July 14, 2008 at 4:46 pm
WALCOTT?????????
Surely he is the number 1 youngster to watch this season?!?!?! Now he has thierry’s number he’ll flourish.
People forget hes still only a teen.
July 14, 2008 at 4:52 pm
yeah, every1 rite…the truth is we got too many young guns to look forward to.
July 14, 2008 at 4:54 pm
Where’s THeo? but nice article…
July 14, 2008 at 4:55 pm
yh if you were to add others to the list it would HAVE to be walcott, nordtveit, merida, traore and fabianski.
not almunia, he’s too old and not eboue he’s just plan simple….. crap!
July 14, 2008 at 4:58 pm
Just looking at those names is exciting enough!!! guys lets not fight over such minor details, just watcth the begining of a great young team become great men who will be superstars!! AND most importanlty they want to be ARSENAL PLAYERS. Carlos the Warrior…i fucking love it!! All summer all this crap bout Hleb and Adebeayour, to be honest I hope they both fuck off!!! These boys will bring us greatness, dont worry , In Arsene we trust and Arsene don’ t Raise no FOOL!!!!!
July 14, 2008 at 4:59 pm
No Vela????
July 14, 2008 at 5:01 pm
Agreed Chet
July 14, 2008 at 5:02 pm
Anyone got a starting 11 in mind………..??????????
July 14, 2008 at 5:06 pm
in a top ten you shoulf include walcott diaby nordveit fabregas and clichy
July 14, 2008 at 5:14 pm
i love you and your face
July 14, 2008 at 5:18 pm
Gooner chris dont you think bendtner couldve been better than adebayor if he was provided with as much starts?i think bendtner mostly played when arsenal fielded an overally weaker side.I personally think bendtner got a much better first touch and better vision if dropping deeper
July 14, 2008 at 5:22 pm
“why they should be feared by premierships finest defenders”
then you mention alex song LMAO
im sure ferdinand and vidic are quaking in their boots. ROFL
July 14, 2008 at 5:24 pm
weres armand traore ? and nacer barazite ?
July 14, 2008 at 5:28 pm
After much consideration… Song has been replaced with Walcott.
July 14, 2008 at 5:29 pm
jase from zimbabwe
theo is the man,to hell with ade
July 14, 2008 at 5:37 pm
gooner chris LOL
you just completely forgot about walcott! DOHHH!
in future i suggest thinking more carefully to avoid further embarrassment.
July 14, 2008 at 5:39 pm
Almunia and Eboue comments=hilarious!! On a serious note…Bendtner..no chance. I dont think he will ever be good enough for Arsenal. I think Song is making a huge mistake going to the Olympics when that defensive midfield spot is up for grabs. He has taken some slack but he has definitley got the potential to do a flamini on that position
July 14, 2008 at 5:39 pm
Your mistake is to include Bendtner over Theo – why? Simple – THAT goal against Liverpool in the CL. Bendtner is not capable of that.
July 14, 2008 at 5:40 pm
Not at all ‘Me’.
I thought long and hard over the players, and tbh Walcott showed mere glimpses of his quality last season, thats why I put Song in – who was consistent towards the end of the campaign.
July 14, 2008 at 5:50 pm
who reckons adebayor and hleb should leave?> and who should replace them if they do? also barazite should have been considered foir this list!
July 14, 2008 at 5:55 pm
personally, i want to see walcott and vela paly together up front, the same as i want to see walcott and agbonlahor paly together up front more england. the thought of having to contain them both is nightmarish
July 14, 2008 at 5:55 pm
I won’t repeat myself again, the list is First Team players, not Reserves & Youth, that is why the likes of Nordtveit, Barazite are not included.
July 14, 2008 at 5:55 pm
Barazite is being loaned last I heard
July 14, 2008 at 5:57 pm
Yep, they’re just rumours at the moment, but it would be strange if he was loaned to Salamanca.
July 14, 2008 at 6:00 pm
So basically Chris, you’ve created an awful article and let the readers make it for you. Despite this, it’s a good job.
July 14, 2008 at 6:02 pm
I’ve replaced one player after tons of criticism from my readers. I wouldn’t say that’s making it for me George.
July 14, 2008 at 6:05 pm
Not to mention the correction of several mistakes. Not to be rude but what is the real point of this blog? (This is not meant as an offense)
July 14, 2008 at 6:08 pm
To express my own/and other peoples views on the Arsenal first team, also posting the latest news, views and debate.
July 14, 2008 at 6:09 pm
George, I was corrected once, I wouldn’t call that several mistakes…
July 14, 2008 at 6:11 pm
Thanks for carefully re-reading and analysing my post…
July 14, 2008 at 6:12 pm
Not to be rude, but what is the point of leaving comments on my blog when you obviously don’t like it?
July 14, 2008 at 6:13 pm
What is the point of you even running a blog when you make this many mistakes?
July 14, 2008 at 6:15 pm
i think he fancies you Chris.
July 14, 2008 at 6:17 pm
Me I think that clearly you have no life as you’re always floating around blogs offering your uninformed opinion.
July 14, 2008 at 6:17 pm
Ok, I’ve admitted on one occasion that i’ve made a mistake, a basic error. As you have no contribution to make to the blog or the actual topic, I will be blocking you.
All The Best
July 14, 2008 at 6:17 pm
i like it keep it going chris its in my bookmarks and i always check it dont listen to that asshole
July 14, 2008 at 6:18 pm
Cheers P- M and thank you for your continued support.
July 14, 2008 at 6:23 pm
ya screw him chris, you’re entitled to your opinion and you’re entitled to change it
July 14, 2008 at 6:38 pm
Do you think that the Prof. will include these guys in the starting 11? I think Nasri will start season on the bench with Theo and Vela. Bentdner may start if Ade leaves and RVP is injured (which he probably will be).
I agree that these guys are the Dog’s Bollox but I think Prof Wenger will use them in League cup first and slowly edge them into the team. I dont like this but hey, Arsene KNOWS!!!
July 14, 2008 at 7:00 pm
Post# 61; “Me I think you clearly have no life…” – first word could be George revealing his real identity as the previously tedious poster “ME”. Perhaps the saddest and most bitter of AFC blog readers/ posters. I suspect he accidentally trapped an elastic band on his ball bag when he was a boy and his testicles dropped off – hence his hatred of everything and everyone !!
July 14, 2008 at 8:49 pm
Nasri is number one and he is 21…so is Cesc!
I hope to see the re-emergence of Djorou and Denilson- 2 seasons ago they looked the real deal but injuries robbed us of their talents last season. They are only 20/21 respectively.
Also, I think Armand Traore will make a case for inclusion.
July 14, 2008 at 9:54 pm
nothing important really but did anyone notice that adebayor has been cut out of the picture for the new away jersey
probably nothing but just throwing it out there !
July 14, 2008 at 10:16 pm
Hey ppl my tip for best young player would be armand traore apert from the 3 young new players. He got alot of talent i think should be given a chance on the left wing with rosicky unfit and vela adjusting to the prem what do ppl think? Also think diaby gd player but i think he gives i away alot needs to keep it simple sometimes thik he culd be very gd for us thou, got alot of skill and strenght hoe be gd in da air also with his height.
July 14, 2008 at 10:32 pm
God job Chris, not sure I agree with all your opinions or some of those expressed by others but that’s what it’s all about isn’t it. I read blogs to get different views, share ideas and opinons and get feedback. Afterall we all love Arsenal don’t we?
Anyway like most I’m probably too immersed in Arsenal to have a valid opinion regarding other teams and their youth prospects but it seems to me that we have easily the best upcoming talent in football. However the only problem appears to be whether we can keep them all happy. They need consistency, they need to be playing and learning and simply put it appears to be be a case of so many players and so little space.
July 14, 2008 at 10:59 pm
Nice one chris, your a diamond!!!
Thanks for changing crappy song for theo… ;D
July 14, 2008 at 11:02 pm
& Nothing wrong with putting up bendnter chris mate…
Just because of 1 little mistake dont make him a bad player & look a he’s goal % comming off the bench last season..
July 15, 2008 at 12:13 am
I think we need 3 players 1 defender= Kompany, 1 mid= Danail de rossi and 1goalie= Shay Given
That would be a team that can win everything this year maybe next year but surly the Prem this year
Players to get rid of ADE, Helb and Rosicky cos he’s forever out (sick)
July 15, 2008 at 12:29 am
A bit harsh on Rosicky don’t you think?
He’s got the quality to be one of the best players in this league. Surely his run of bad luck is over? He’s recently had the corrective surgery and should be good to go as soon as he is recovered.
July 15, 2008 at 5:28 am
good piece, but you’ve forgotten about song?
July 15, 2008 at 6:51 am
TTTTTTTTTHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this has to be his yr. when he came on as a sub last season he made an immediate impact into the team, the energy, the light speed runs making experienced defenders look like crap. i like the dude.
sorry guyz but im not convienced by bedtner in anyway
all carlos vela needs is getting used to the english game and then he will be doing to terry what he did to sergio ramos.
samir nasri is about to make a whole team crap on itself just by the mention of his name, all he needs is to adapt to the fast paced game of the premiership.
July 15, 2008 at 7:56 am
It is exciting when we look at the young palyers we have coming through now, and with Wenger hinting that Randall, Gibbs, Wilshere, Lanbury and Merida (probably others) might get a chance with the first team this year, I think this could be the season where the world gets to see just how good Arsenals youth academy has been.
I know a lot of people have asked who will play in Flamini’s position if Gilberto leaves and we dont get Barry or someone else in, but its not a concern because Ramsay and Denilson can play there, in fact when Denilson joined Arsenal he was officially a centre back!!
I have to be honest though and feel that maybe we do need one more player to come in, someone with a bit more experience, whilst I would love to see Gareth Barry, I also think Johnson of Man City and Noble of West Ham would be great signings, and whilst they are both still young and have a long way to go, they are already experienced premiership players and would cost a lot less that the likes of Veloso who whilst I think is a great player dont think he is worth the reported £24 million pounds that has been slapped on his head
July 15, 2008 at 10:19 am
The only youngster I’m looking forward to is Fabulous Cesc Fabgregas. The rest are nothing.
July 15, 2008 at 10:46 am
Most pointless post ever. When i read the title i was expecting the likes of Jay Emmanuel Thomas, Jack Wilshere, Kieran Gibbs, Mark Randall and Nacer Barazite but you’ve just posted the ones everyone knows about and is expecting to see things from.
I may be being a bit harsh but i don’t think we’re looking out for these guys coz we’re expecting to see a lot from them. It’s the Barazite’s and Gibbs’ we should be actually looking to see.
July 15, 2008 at 11:38 am
Personally I think Song is the key to this season. You can give me all those attacking players but at the end of the day we need to defend better in the big games. The likes of Petit and Silva were always essential to success in the past. Therefore Song who is strong and no nonsense is required for the rest to flourish.
July 15, 2008 at 1:24 pm
Nasri is a quality signing, so as a Utd supporter I’d just like to say you utter bastards!

July 15, 2008 at 4:18 pm
All you Arsenal fans looking for a quality site with great info, well here is one I found:

July 15, 2008 at 4:32 pm
i like theo he is good, he has tremendous sense of timing.
July 15, 2008 at 4:39 pm
Jeff, you mean your own site or you so happened to find it?
July 15, 2008 at 5:16 pm
Duck – I wish it was mine though.
July 15, 2008 at 5:39 pm
But, I think Arsenal still needs a strong and commanding defensive midfielder, and I hope AW can realize it by bring Garreth Barry in
July 16, 2008 at 3:37 am
Merida. Period!
July 16, 2008 at 5:01 am
Fabianski should play more. Search for young CB pliz Arsene. We have a 2 squad of midfield but CB? I can’t recall any highly rated young CB at AFC. Italian might be a good choice, the next Nesta, Maldini n’ Cannavaro.
Check Out The Current Squad…
Almunia, Fabianski
Sagna, Hoyte, Eboue, Clichy, Traore
Gallas, Toure, Senderos, Djourou, Song
Walcott, Vela, Rosicky, Nasri
Fabregas, Diaby, Denilson, Ramsey
RVP, Bentner, Eduardo
I really want to see this player to Arsenal if we afford,
Casillas, Pirlo, Ramos, De Rossi, Sneijder, Agbanlahor
Go get them Arsene.
July 16, 2008 at 5:48 am
hi!!!
July 16, 2008 at 10:35 am
we need to strengthen our CB…
but…
seems SONG played well at the end of the season at that post…
nothing to rush for…
i trust in SONG ability…
he proved it so far…
give him chances to gain experience from the tireless Cb, toure…
he’ll done his job..
July 16, 2008 at 11:42 am
mr.sult, are you song posting with a fake name or are you a family member of his??
July 16, 2008 at 2:23 pm
