José Antonio Reyes – Waste Of Talent

July 5, 2008

When José Antonio Reyes was signed from Sevilla for almost £17.5million in the spring month of January 04, Arsenal boss Arséne Wenger and fans alike were expecting big things from the 24-year-old Spaniard.

Reyes though, is one of many Arsenal players to of left the club before gaining an ‘cocky’ attitude resting on past acheivements and almost literally – flushing their career down the toilet.

We’ve compiled a profile of the frontman’s footballing career so far and why his own fans are even starting to turn against him.

Here It Is…

Arsenal Career:

Reyes made his debut the month after his signing in a 2-1 win over Manchester City. Two days later, he scored an own goal against Middlesbrough in the Carling Cup. Later that month, Reyes scored twice against Chelsea to knock them out of the FA Cup. He also scored against Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal, and his goals in the penultimate two games of the season helped keep Arsenal’s unbeaten run in the FA Premier League going.

Superb hatricks in friendlies during the summer 2004 showed his improvement and Reyes was a prominent influence on Arsenal’s impressive start to the 2004-05 season, in which he managed to score in each of the first six games. However, Reyes struggled during the middle of the season after Arsenal’s defeat by Manchester United at Old Trafford. His inconsistent performance brought little reward for much of the season, and yet towards the end of it he scored three valuable goals.

Speculation

In early 2005, he was reported to be homesick while at Arsenal, even though José’s parents Mari and Francisco as well as brother Jesús lived with him in England. During a prank call perpetrated by COPE Radio of Spain in February 2005, a prankster claiming to be the president of Spanish club Real Madrid reportedly called Reyes’ agent and spoke to Reyes himself about a possible transfer deal.

In the ensuing conversation, Reyes allegedly declared that life in London was far from what he had envisioned and he would welcome a move back to his native Spain. Reyes also supposedly said that he wanted out of the club as there were “bad people” at Arsenal.

He temporarily ended speculation about a move away from Highbury in July 2005, when he signed a new six-year contract and declared that he was “looking forward to having many more successful years at the club.”

During Arsenal’s 2005-06 UEFA Champions League run, Reyes featured heavily against, among others, Real Madrid, Juventus and Villarreal, in the most impressive Champions League results for Arsenal to date. He came on as a substitute in the May 17, 2006 final against Spanish champions Barcelona, which Arsenal lost 2-1.

Bye Bye José?

However, in August 2006 he expressed a desire not to play in Arsenal’s 2006-07 Champions League qualifying match against Dinamo Zagreb – to do so would render him ‘cup-tied’ and complicate a move to Real Madrid. Wenger left him out of the team, thus fuelling speculation that a transfer was soon to be agreed.

Shortly before the closure of the 2006 summer transfer window, Madrid and Arsenal agreed to exchange Reyes for Brazilian international Júlio Baptista, each on a season-long loan deal.

Real Madrid Career:

Reyes impressed whilst playing for his ‘dream club’ Madrid, and scored his first goal for the Spanish giants with a curling free kick against Real Sociedad.

On the final day of the 2006-07 season, the focus was on David Beckham in his final match for Real but Reyes, in the final game of his loan spell, came on as a substitute for the injured Beckham, scoring with his first touch and again later on.

Hotshot Reyes managed to grab 6 goals in his La Liga campaign that season with most of them coming from a set-piece or long range opportunity.

Atletico Madrid Career:

During late July, Reyes passed his medical at Madrid. He was unveiled on July 31 as an Atletico player for the next four years. It is believed Arsenal will receive €12m (£8.1m) for the transfer. Reyes made his debut for Atlético in a match against Italian side Lazio, in which he scored a goal and made an assist in a 3-1 victory in the annual Amsterdam Tournament.

Reyes has had previous success in this pre-season tournament, being named player of the tournament in the 2004 Amsterdam Tournament while playing for Arsenal. Ironically, Arsenal were winners of the 2007 Amsterdam Tournament.

The focus though, was on Reyes’ league form which never managed to get going at all for Atletico. Once an up and coming player for one of football’s giants and now a player failing to score in 26 appearances for a mid-table Spanish side who’s own fans are even turning against him.

A sad downfall for a player who was once considered one of the hottest young stars in Europe. I’ll leave you with a video of the man himself and his best moments in a red and white shirt.

    I liked the lad.

  2. andygooner Says:

    i didn’t like him

  3. andygooner Says:

    infact, nah he was alright

  4. Gooner Chris Says:

There’s a difference of opinion amongst Arsenal fans about Reyes. I personally liked him in his first season, but when the Madrid rumours starting circulating I really just wanted him to go.

  5. duck Says:

nice one for a change away from transfer rumours and adebayor :)

  6. Evo Says:

well said chris, he definately had the chance to become “great” but his downfall was his own doing. he’s a nobody now and i cant see that changing anytime soon.

  7. GoonerC Says:

I really liked him, always felt the arsenal fans gave him a hard ride. No one seemed to understand that he was a young Spanish lad from some tiny villiage dropped into London and he found it hard to adapt- when the whole homesick thing came out and some idiots got mad about it I just thought; if i was in his situation I might be a bit homesick too. He always gave 100% out on the pitch, and we really missed his goals from the wing when he left. Very sad to see what has happened to him now but I for one hope he manages to ressurect his career somewhere.

  8. Matt Says:

I’ve always liked him…. will never forget that first goal he scored against Chelsea….

  9. dagim Says:

i m totaly agree with you because while in arsenal his atractive player in the premiearlegue. but now I dont know were is talent

  10. Chrissie Greeno Says:

Buckets of talent and thimbles of brains. Shame he wasn’t as bright as our number 4 !

  11. aqq Says:

    nice article, keep em coming!

  12. Gunner Jillu Says:

The year we got to the final of the CL he was the most fouled player because of his constant diving, he was so skilfull but would fall at a drop of a hat, it used to wind me up! he had a good CL campaign for us but good riddens, no point being skilfull if you dont have fight and desire to win, which i necer saw in him

  13. hente Says:

I think he was always a professional and honest person. Or at least so professional and honest as a player can be when things just doesn’t go your way in new circumstanses.

He always acted like a pro till the end and I truly believe he never wanted to cause any ‘troubles’ to the club that payed so much for him. In my eyes he was no troublemaker and acted the way that was the best possible way for both him and also for the club.

  14. dial square Says:

The only real goal worth fighting in fortbal as in any sport is to become a better player. Once money is the goal the downward slide is inevitable.

  15. Stone Says:

GoonerC: He did not come from some village in Spain, he came from the fourth biggest city of the whole country, Sevilla.

I miss Reyes, he was awesome at his best. Such a shame he couldn´t be close to as wise as our Fantastic Four.

  16. hente Says:

I think money was never an issue in Reyes departure.

  17. Gooner Chris Says:

    Stone, GoonerC is actually right.

Reyes was born in Gitano, Utrera which is a town south-east of Seville

  18. joetodd Says:

That video didn’t have the rocket against Chelsea. I really liked he when he was at Arsenal, poster of him everywhere. When he left i was disapointed.

  19. Gunner Jillu Says:

hente, he aint no mother Teresa, he missed Sapin, granted. But while he was at Arsenal he showed flashes of quality but was never a player that other teams were scared of. Zidane called him the “little motorcycle” and Beckham sang his praises cause when Seville played Real, he tore them to peices, he has tslent but he is not a winner that you can rely on

  20. Dgob Says:

Good riddance. A duplicitous and over-valued player who really epitomised the disloyalty that is so frequently levelled at our recent/present stars. His part in the Arigones verbal assault on TH14 has not fully been considered in public debate and … oh what’s the point?

  21. Gooner Chris Says:

Yep, thats what gave me the idea to publish this article, cheers TGF. :D

  22. el niño Says:

I agree with GoonerC, josé always gave 100% and was always one of, if not the hardest working player on the pitch. After the incident with marca most fans did turn on josé and i don’t think it helped him. He was a nice lad and a really skillful player, and to be honest i think emirates would have been perfect for him to show what he could do on the wing, and we definatly missed his pace and passing in the first season there, i hope that he manages to get his career back on track.

  23. bergy Says:

    was one of my fav.

just wonder who made him wana leave

  24. Luchang Says:

OMG! I remember we had Reyes, van Persie, Bergkamp, Henry, Pires, Campbell and Vieira. What has happened to Arsenal? Where are the superstars? I miss those good old days :)

  25. duck Says:

I think he needs to kick start his career again. His dream was to play for R.Madrid, however, it was short-lived although it happen because RM simply did not wish to purchase him. So, a loan spell was all he got.

I’m quite sure he was very disappointed and it affected his game after that with A.Madrid. I reckon a move back to Sevilla where the fans loved him will do him good.

It’s really a shame to see him leave Arsenal. He received just the same amount of kicks when he was playing well for us, so its really nothing to do with the physical side of the EPL. It’s got to do with RM’s illegal approach that affected him.

Clearly, he is an emotional guy who can get easily affected by it – Homesick, unsettled by RM and having a bad spell wiht A.Madrid (which I suspect is out of disappointment).

  26. Michael Says:

He didn’t cost 17.5 Wiltord is still our biggest signing apparently

  27. Gunner Jillu Says:

I thought too much was made of that, Arogones obvoiusly tried to get Reyes to show his class so he shouted something to wind him up, that should have stayed in camp. Whoever revealed what the Spain Manager said should not have brought it public. Unlike Schmichael who was visibly seen against Arsenal on tele, calling the Legend Wrighty a “black bstrd” he should have been banned for a few games, but nothing at all was done about it

  28. Gunner Jillu Says:

naa wrong Michael, Wiltord was bought for about 11 mill, Reyes is in the History books as Arsenals biggest signing. Bad knowledge for a Gunner I have to say

  29. duck Says:

Reyes = Waste of talent, unfortunate in most decision makings.

Wiltord = Lack talent (touch, dribbling and shooting), yet a very lucky guy. How many fluke and lucky goals did he score for us?? hehe.. You’ve got to wonder if Wenger actually bought him for his attributes or for his luck!

  30. Luca SAGE Says:

I liked him. But he sure missed the sunshine.

  31. Gooner Chris Says:

Reyes’ actual fee was about £10.5 mill but reportedly went up due to appearances and goals.

  32. Handy Says:

    Reyes > Hleb

  33. had enough of wenger Says:

i don’t blame him for wanting to leave! in the run up to the champions league final ,his form was great for us. especially against madrid! . blame the manager for dropping him for pires ( who was not commited to our club)who was going to leave as was sol campball and ashley cole , but our so called manager picked them for the final! nothing has changed since then! our players taking the p*ss out of us fans in flamini hleb and adebayer! the blame has to rest with wenger!! the sooner he f*cks of upstairs the better! he is starting to remind me of martin jol with his obsession of central midfielders. bring in van basten before someone else snaps him up , cos in reality he has lost it! not saying sack him, just promote him as director of football..plus in the sale of adebayer use a buy one get one free(eboue) as part of any deal.we have become a laughing stock . what the fc uk has it got to do with wenger about spuds signing of modric? worry about the sh*t going on at our club!

  34. Gunner Jillu Says:

Na, I remember when we signed him, I saw it on teletext that we had signed him for 17.5mill

  35. potter Says:

His part in the Arigones verbal assault on TH14 has not fully been considered in public debate and … oh what’s the point?.

That is the point, He came to us in the Henry years had he been here in the Fabregas era as a team we would be a lot more direct and would not have been accused so often of trying to walk the ball into the net.
He got caught in a political situation which due to his upbringing he was’nt able to handle . Great Shame.

  36. Gunner Jillu Says:

I hate it when people slag of Wenger, he has this amazing ability of finding talent, better than any other manager, also he is a fotball purist, he makes us play the game so that even neutrals including United, Liverpool and even Spurs fans sit down eagerl to watch us play. You ask anyone, apart from your own club who do you like to watch in the Premiership most ill say Arsenal

  37. duck Says:

Now he’s missing the goal scoring touches too!

Wenger never bought any real wingers after that. Hleb and Rosicky are basically AMs with their previous clubs. Then Pennant behaviour didn’t help himself, so did Bentley (also more of an AM). Thus left the team with the lack of width. To make it worse, Hleb doesn’t shoot!

Reyes, Pires, Ljungberg and Wiltord (some how) were all goal scorers.. were replaced with Hleb (shy of shooting), Rosicky (injury prone), possible replacements Pennant (attitude problem) and Bentley (impatient). Now thats probably the reason why we have not won any silverware for 3 seasons.

  38. Ricky Says:

I dont think we paid 17.5m for reyes, im sure it was to rise to that amount if he done certan things wich her did not..

He did look like he was gonna be top class for a short space of time & i was really begining to like him but then he just lost it… Its a shame really as he could have been as good as anybody…

  39. Fabregas' Dad Says:

I had high hopes for Reyes and he was brilliant and could’ve probably gotten some consistency into his game had he stayed and tried harder but you can’t blame him for it cos that’s who he is and he didn’t like London (although he’s got problems at Atletico as well).

If he hadn’t left we’d have some great wingers now with Hleb, Rosicky and him (although we might not have bought Rosicky if he hadn’t left but we did buy Rosicky few months before he left).

Never good to see such talent go to waste but he’d surely be a much better player if he tried harder and worked on the weaker aspects of his game.

  40. Gooner Says:

With reference to – Had enough of wenger.

I think spuds should not masquerade as arsenal suporters.

  41. had enough of wenger Says:

if it was on teletext it must be true!! NOT.. arsenal never disclose their transfer fees! only they and seville know how much we paid for him! plus madrid owed us money for anelka and seville owed madrid money so some sort of deal was struck!between the three(it was on some disclosure of accounts at an AGM

  42. duck Says:

It would have been hard to keep Reyes with his heart already set on R.Madrid. If you need to blame someone, Real Madrid is the cause of all this trouble. That includes Barca. This two clubs has been unsettling our top players season after season but yet UEFA and FIFA doesn’t have the balls to take any action against them.

P.S: In my previous post, i mean Reyes lost his touch, NOT Wenger.

  43. Gunner Jillu Says:

Yeh and pennant looks really good now doesnt he, he is still just better than average and Bentley had a good season but I doubt the top four clubs will be knocking on his door now he wants to move. Best chance is for Everton or Spurs to go for him. Hleb and Rosicky 10 times better then the pair you mentioned Duck

  44. had enough of wenger Says:

GOONER, im not a spud! i doubt you even know how we got the gooner tag? me just fed up of everyone licking wengers arse when he has now become an embarrasement to us fans with his lies ..
il be waiting for your answer to why we call ourselves gooners!

  45. rosey Says:

    Waste of talent
    Cheat & Diver
    Weather too cold
    Food was nasty
    Missed his family
    Missed Paella
Just turn it in will ya.

Was so glad to see him fuck off and disappear into obscurity, just like many before him, thought Arsenal was a stepping stone, but soon realised it’s the pinnacle of his, or any players career.
I wonder if Adebayor or Hleb can read?

  46. sssss Says:

had enough of wenger….r u a goonner?….. in arsene we trust

  47. gooner KB Says:

waste of money, think that you could of had sergio aguero and you picked reyes

  48. duck Says:

I suppose Pennant and Bentley will be better players had they stayed in Arsenal and continue to progress. Hleb has probably missed more chances to score than Adebayor? hehe.. he choose to pass even with the goal 2 yards away from him. And Rosicky is never fit enough to last 10 games in a row is he?

Well, i am speaking of the past. I’m sure Rosicky is the best among them, but he needs to be able to play. Otherwise sitting on the injury table means his contribution is NIL.

  49. Gunner Jillu Says:

no one licking anyones arse, but we are supporting our manager, we came very close last season, we lost it at the end, if we improve from last season then we will pick up trophies.

What AGM did you hear that? At the Pub

  50. had enough of wenger Says:

DUCK, without dein there to fight back at the barcas and madrids etc ,its open season for them ! whos gonna speak up for our club! we still have no replacement for dein and that number cruncher edelman! only wenger spouting some rubish about modric

  51. duck Says:

Darren Dein help to sell Henry to Barca!

  52. Gunner Jillu Says:

Didnt hear Dein stopping Anelka, Overmars, Petit, leave, Real, Barca are glamerous clubs who will always do what they do to get players to sign for them

  53. clockendjim Says:

I think if he had stayed at Arsenal we would have had our own Ronaldo by now. What a shame things didn’t shape up differently; quite where the blame lies I do not know
The beginning of the end was the cynical going over he received from the Neville gangsters at Old Trafford with the referee giving him no protection. I will never forgive them for that; he was never the same after that

  54. duck Says:

No doubt the club needs to replace Dein. But probably not Edelman. Don’t ask me who it should be, if Arsenal haven’t found a suitable person.. then I suppose none of our little knowledge about whats best in the club’s operation will know right?

Things are a bit slow in our transfer is probably due to the vacant positions as mentioned above.

  55. duck Says:

Clockendjim, some refs are clearly Man Utd fans. What more when they PROBABLY dislike Arsenal because of the lack of English players?!

  56. Gunner Jillu Says:

things are slow because the transfer market has gone crazy, prices have gone through the roof and agents are going public

  57. Xan Nasir Says:

I really liked him…Infact he was one of my favourites !! I still remember in Community sheild match between Arsenal Vs Man U the commentator said “Its a match between Men and Bullets” I was literally thinking of him today that where has he ended up now..

  58. PPL Says:

he is now a tottaly different player, i dont know what happened to him but it often happened, a player that leaves arsenal (reyes, ljunberg, viera, a cole, henry and so) they just get worse… and sadly 4 reyes most of players that go to rmad they dont get better they just get worse(beckham, batista, ruud, saviola, cannavaro, …) there is always exceptions, but at the end it was just a bad move 4 him..

  59. Gooner Chris Says:

He’s been voted as one of the 10 worst La Liga signings according to Goal.com.

  60. duck Says:

There’s no Henry here to intimidate him now. I’d welcome him back if he puts his heart into playing for us again. I’m sure his price will be very very low now.

Unfortunately, Wenger do not re-buy his players. But Wenger also do not buy foreign players from EPL, but he bought Gallas (ok, part of a deal) and are now looking at Santa Cruz.. who knows?

  61. duck Says:

Rio Mavuba, is listed in that top 10 flop in La Liga… someone who used to be linked to Arsenal. Henry and Reyes (as mentioned by Chris) are both found in that list.

  62. AvidHotstuff Says:

I will say this , he was a very exciting player and did deliver better and more often than those who came in after him.
Pity about the madrid pranks , he may have progressed at Arsenal.
    Anyway now he’s a nobody…….

  63. Danny Says:

    Big big talent,

Good article, he was certainly an exciting signing, maybe the most exciting signing of Wenger’s era, probably since Wrighty and maybe beyond.

Perversely, I rather liked the lad, though he certainly was not easy to appreciate.

He was without any doubt the victim of the Henry era, beyond the arkward Aragones debacle, he was often on the end of the Frenchman’s most disgusted scowls and having come from a pond where he was not only the biggest fish but expected to join the truly greats, that was quite some change.

If Thierry had of looked after him a little better their may have been hope for the lad, but despite sometimes making what looked a conscious effort, in his more despairing moments, you could hardly say Thierry was the most encouraging of captains. Undoubtedly, Jose’s constant bleating about being unsettled and the allure of Real Madrid isolated him from the squad and was the cause for such indifference bordering on animosity.

Obviously, misadvised, misguided and now a lost soul, he seemed unsure of how to approach bedding into the English game, his trickery earning so many fouls, but if only he had shown the will to occassionally stay on his feet and broach more dangerous areas, maybe in the way Ronaldo has managed to adapt.

His inability to conquer the rough and tumble completely came to the head, when Gary Neville and co disgustingly assaulted him, determined to target him and undermine our flowing game. In some ways, this encapsulated the Arsenal of the time, which may be why I could never quite hate the little Spaniard with ants in his pants.

I will remember, him as the one that got away or the little sod who never quite got it. Surely, with time, Wenger would have tapped into his talent.

I will also remember the wonderful double strike against Chelsea but most importantly I will remember our great Captain, the true warrior Patrick Vieira, pulling that complete t*at Gary Neville aside prior to another Arsenal-United war and letting him know if he was going to target Reyes, then he had to knock on his door, Keane had something similar to say in return, although it was clearly more for show but it was the t*at and the Irishman who looked most shaken and Vieira, who looked ready to murder.

He needed a lot of looking after and what with his whingeing gob, was a complete liabiltiy but he could have been special. Maybe if he were to join the club now, he could make it work, but then we were already a great side and he was in the shadow of a true Arsenal great.

    Great Vid!

  64. No 65 Says:

He looked fine playing for the gunners so why he wanted to leave i found strange at the time

  65. aLaN Says:

    I really like him.
What a waste of talent, sigh……

  66. Chrissie Greeno Says:

Sometimes you just cannaot settle in another country and there’s nothing you can do about it. Retrospectively I’m sure that he could have handles his problems better. i don’t remember his moaning like f*ck about Arsenal after his move (unlike Bentley). Hope the lad can turn it around.

  67. No 65 Says:

Van Baten to replace AW? lol

Yeah i expect gunners to challenge for honours but never take trophies for granted.

  68. Erik Says:

I think if you are getting paid a good salary and you are playing good football then you should stay where you are.

More money doesnt mean anything, bet a lot of people here might have been happier in some of the less paid jobs they’ve had during their lives.

If Reyes had stayed and was happy playing for us he could have been one of our best players by now, instead he might end up in a 2nd Division side or relegation battling team within a few seasons.

We all make mistakes, he knows he made a big one by leaving Arsenal… when will people learn! ;)

  69. scrags Says:

He was never the same after that Man U game where they were allowed to kick the shite out of him

  70. Chrissie Greeno Says:

Imagine if we kicked Ronaldo how they kicked Jose. Hansen et al would still be talking about is 6 months later, red cards galore, fines from the FA, a handfull of penalties and Flamini hanged from the Stretford End goal posts ! – thats what I love about the EPL, a nice level playing field

  71. dumbo Says:

Thierry Henry did not pass to him.

  72. rebel gooner Says:

i liked him,, such a waste of talent,,

  73. Simmo Says:

At most JAR cost 12m pw because it was 10m up front and it could rise to 17.5m which it didn’t get close to doing because of his short stay. The only reason it even made it up to 12m was because of the champions league final appearance and the FA Cup win.

  74. Thomas "right at the end" Says:

they kicked him from bolton to brighton and was living under
the shadow of henry, OH and what was that he says he didnt
like the shops in london, they close to early
    twat

  75. Rambot Says:

I blame the agents for everything bad that happens in football.

  76. Danny Says:

Whoops. My mistake. Not since Wrighty but since another true legend, Dennis Bergkamp!

  77. Paulie Says:

How do you reckon Reyes wasted his talent by leaving Arsenal. Dont kid yourself mate, he wouldnt be exactly laden down with medals had he stayed. As long as Wengers in charge we wont win another trophy and in all honesty I think even the Arsene knows brigade know that deep down. Wengers been a great coach in the past but sadly like a lot of the greats his time has passed. He hasnt got the ability to convince top class players to jion us and all the spin and bullshit that surrounds him wont hide that fact. Getting back to the Reyes piont, its typical that some fans reckon he stepped down leaving Arsenal but ask yourselves honestly if thats true, wake the f ,uck up and smell the coffee.

  78. bhajji Says:

    how shit is reyes??

  79. Danny Says:

Reyes is not good enough for Arsenal. I don’t like him

  80. Doublegooner Says:

Over rated, out of his depth away from Seville & no right foot.

    Wenger’s biggest mistake.

  81. Eastham Says:

Arsenal fans were hard on Reyes!!! Absolute rubbish – no way. They did everything they could to make him feel at home. Even with the Madid rumours they kept on singing his song. The poster who claimed that obviuosly never went to a match.

  82. chris Says:

Do you remember his 1st game for arsenal? an own goal against middlesbrough in the league cup semifinal haha wrong way jose!

  83. dokieh Says:

I remember his first goal for Arsenal, against Chelsea, from outside the box. It seemed that he was in the good road to success, but…

    http://www.ligafutbol.com

  84. QuartzGooner Says:

Reyes failed to settle in England, as much as he failed to settle at Arsenal.

I am not keen on the article, as it leaves out that Reyes had considerable family problems during his time in England that would have made it hard to be settled.

He had talent, but just fell short of putting al lhis atributes togther to be consistent.

  85. seb Says:

I remember Members Day at Highbury in summer 2004, Reyes was the laziest player on show, didn’t take anything seriously, while all around him model pros like Dennis Thierry Bobby and Freddie were giving their all. It’s no great surprise to me that with such a poor work ethic, his career has come unstuck. As soon as he fails to be the wonder boy, first with us, now with Atletico, he can’t be arsed.

  86. Willo Says:

I’ve had enough of ‘had enough of Wenger’. Definate Spu*s stirrer.
Sit back and enjoy the football. Wenger is a genius, your a twat.
I’ve waited for nearly fifty years supporting the lads through thick and thin. I’ve seen a few managers come and go but for the life of me I have never slagged one of them. Because Arsenal are my club and I’ll always support them. ‘had enough of Wenger’ is showing he has the same mental qualities as Reyes. Give the club 100% or don’t bother.
How can anyone but a real twat not take enjoyment out of the football we play. We have a shortage of trophies lately so the fuck what. We have had the fortune to be around when our team is the best footballing team on the planet. Go back to the late 60’s a bloke like you would have topped himself. But the true fans were there.
Sitting through and taking crap from all sides. But slag anything to do with the Arsenal, no way. So take your mate Paul up to the shite lane and watch Bentley not good enough for us become a legend at Sp*rs.
Your a twat mate, simple. Not a true fan. So be gone twat!

  87. Grooner Goonerer Says:

He was alright, the big simpleton.

  88. reyesiaceunt Says:

at the end of the day he’s a spic ceunt. feuck him id love to see a donkey rape him up his spanish arse h o l e

  89. caknucklehead Says:

can anyone tell me the name of the song/band in the vid? good’un
    thx

  90. James Says:

He was a good footballer, but I think that’s all he was.

He probably wasn’t very bright in scholastic terms, which made it hard for him to adjust to a different country/culture.

  91. payadesign Says:

    hi
    nice blog

  92. Raymondo6 Says:

He was kicked out of the Premiership by the Neville brothers. I remember him for his goal away to Fulham, playing at QPR, when he took th ball out of Van de Saar’s hands.

  93. ArsenalSweden Says:

I hate the fucker, big mamas boy !!!
    Go and retaire Reyes !!!!

  94. nucks Says:

We all thought reyes would turn out great. To be fair it is a massive lifestyle change from Spain to England and some players settle and some don’t. He had pace and skill but I always felt he lacked footballing intelligence and was a little bit one paced. He would run at full speed ahead all guns blazing. In stark contrast to say Bergkamp or Pires who had the ability to draw players in close to them by slowing down and then making the defender commit before leaving them stranded. Sad really because he had a lot of ability.

  95. CHIMA........DE ARSENAL GENERAL. Says:

its been obvious that most players who left ARSENAL usually dont do well where ever they go e.g Patrick Viera has never been himself since leaving for juventus then inter milan, our goal king Thierry Henry left for barcelona & has been a mere shadow of himself, what about Edu who is nowhere since he disappeared to valencia.this should be a great warning for ADEBAYOR de greatest goal misser & HLEB for i foresee similar things happening to them as they wish to force themselves out of the emirate family.FABREPAS sorry FABREGAS is a very wise for staying put.

  96. Harry Barracuda Says:

With all this shit about wanting to be back home with his mummy he was obviously a fucking big puff. Well Rid.

  97. Oladapo Falade Says:

Is just that Reye is calm and gentle guy. I liked him. He plays well while on the field.

Let him be, somebody, somewhere, his talent will come back. Amen.

  98. Two words – Francis Jeffers. Like Jeffers, Reyes was a fantastic young talent, who had so much potential to become a top class player at Arsenal. I feel that football players are too spoilt nowadays. Why bitch and moan when you playing for a top European club and getting paid a great salary? Many of us can only dream of half the opportunites these ingrates receive. Reyes has only himself to blame. I hope Cristiano Ronaldo looks at him as an example of what happens to young players who think they are bigger than the game.

  99. OzGoonerGuy Says:

Don’t care about Reyes one way or the other. Only thing was he got kicked out of the game in the EPL by Tards like Neville and got no protection from the refs. He couldn’t hack it, c’est la vie.

But who is feeding the fans shit here. First Wenger tells us at the end of season to expect signings in 2-3 weeks – nothing. The club says they’ll give Wenger whetever financial backing he wants to buy players. Now Wenger (after only being able to sign a 16-yr old) says we need to sell our best players every year. And we’re one of the most profitable clubs in the world? WTF is going on???

  100. M Says:

I respected him for coming out and rejecting the bad things Ashley Cole said about Arsenal in his autobiography.

    Eboue OUT, Reyes IN!

  101. Tuiteser Says:

Reyes was a top class player and I wud have loved for him to stay. The reasons he left were because Gary Neville GBH’d him in that game at Old Trafford and because of the Aragones incident where the old bastard made racial comments against Henry.
Both these happened around the same time and cannot be denied that they had an impact on Reyes and Arsenal. Sayin his a puff for not being able to settle in England is daft, how many British players are playing abroad or have ever played abroad? They are the puff’s.

  102. Andrew. Says:

Reyes was just not good enough. Rather than looking for excuses Arsene brought him so it was just a poor buy.
I remember Utd brought Ronaldo around the same time & alot of gooners were saying we had the best deal. But it was obvious who had the real talent.

  103. Jimbo Says:

Reyes was a jinx, glad he fucked off. This club have never played successfully with a left footed player on the left wing. Before anyone chucks Limpar back at me, Limpar was two footed, not the same thing. Arsene tried to make him a striker but he didn’t do the job. He winged and was sold.

Reyes also scored the goals that won Real the the spaninsh title a couple of years back.

Wenger deserves time to get it right again as his team are constantly ripped apart by transfer. Get behind him.

Wiltord is Arsenal’s Record signing 11m, Reyes 10.5. The fee didn’t rise because he didn’t play enough or score enough.

  104. Kaneos Says:

I thnik he amy be able to relaunch his career at Atletico. I thought if he’d gone to Italy instead of England he’d have become a world beater because of his style of play.

  105. I think he has the potential to become the wonderkid.

  106. Big-gun Says:

I thought he was great for us, and whats more, if he started the final wed have a cl under our belt imo.

  107. Osse Says:

Amazing player. Great left foot, fast, good dribbler and gutsy. Obviously a badly educated and easily manipulated person.

2bad I always liked him. I did feel like Henry had it in for poor Reyes though….

  108. din Says:

henry was jealous of him, and as a team captain did not treat him rightly by not passing to him.
henry the lousy legend, not doing well after joining himself to the louts at greedy barca.

  109. Gunner1 Says:

Spot on son. Great talent but couldn’t handle the rain. Bit of a wimp.
