French Talent Set To Gain Experience At Saints Before Joining Gunners?

June 29, 2008

Newly-signed Southampton recruit Morgan Schneiderlin will ‘gain experience’ with the Championship club before joining Arsenal in a ‘few seasons’ time according to Strasbourg’s supporters club.

The 18-year-old completed his move to the Saints from Ligue 1 side Strasbourg for a reported fee of €1.5 million just 3 days ago.

Schneirderlin also made a reference to Arsenal when questioned about his move to Southampton, citing the example of Theo Walcott and his rise through the Southampton ranks before a switch to Arsenal.

“Here you do not have to wait until a certain age in order to play. If you are good enough then you will play and that is important to me.”

Reports in France though, suggest that the France Under-18 international is set to join up with Arséne Wenger’s side once he’s formed ‘a mental and physical experience’ playing several seasons at St Mary’s.

This news comes as Werder Bremen fringe player Amaury Bischoff claimed he is set to sign for Arsenal in a few days time.

Schneiderlin has represented his country at under-16, under-17, under-18 and under-19 levels, and has also captained the under-18 side.

Personally, this deal sounds a bit strange as surely Schneiderlin’s price tag will only go up after several seasons experience at Southampton? It could certainly be true though, with a possible clause in the starlet’s contract making an Arsenal move permanent at a certain date.

What do you think? Is the deal completely made up? Or does it have something in it?

I don’t understand this, strange one.

  2. joetodd Says:

It’s according to their supporter’s club, I really don’t believe this as Arsenal would have signed him now, rather than later. Why not buy him, then loan him out to Southampton.

  3. Gooner Chris Says:

Why would they make it up?

He’s unlikely to play first team football for Southampton, he might get the odd appearance which will help him gain experience.

  4. Arse&Nose Says:

Why would southampton pay a fee knowing that he will end up at Arsenal? sounds iffy

  5. Spike Says:

Maybe Artsenal financed the deal as Southampton are pretty skint.

  6. joetodd Says:

They would pay a fee for his services up until he leaves I suppose.

  7. Junkyard Says:

Perhaps Arsenal have paid for the deal, other than that, I cannot see it.

Bet he plays 1st team football for Arsenal before Bischoff!

  8. GunnerRashidinho Says:

Wenger did play for Strasbourg hence buying all these Strasbourg talent

  9. GunnerRashidinho Says:

    talents*

  10. Fabregas' Dad Says:

    What position does he play?

If reports are to be believed, so far we’ve signed Coquelin, Bischoff, Ozyakup, Ramsey, Nasri and this guy.

This and the Bischoff transfer seem a bit strange really.

TBH the only thing i’m worried about is that Arsene’s stockpiling midfielders again instead of just buying a straight midfielder who will be able to play alongside Cesc. We don’t want another Diarra type situation and if this guy plays DM, we’ll have about 5 promising DM but none of them ready yet and then most of them will end up leaving.

  11. There’s many ways to look at this.

€1.5m doesn’t go far in Arsenal’s loan market. Francis Jeffers cost Everton £1m for a year, and the same money got Birmingham City Johan Djourou for six months.

I really don’t know what to make of it. Wait and see.

  12. J.Sanderson Says:

Arsenal cannot buy players for another club, it breaks FIFA regulations. Any form of money switching is illegal. If we did buy him and loan him, then at least one party would have to announce it otherwise it just looks strange.

I remember we were after him last summer, he seemed pretty confident he was coming, and is very highly rated. It does seems strange a top talent like him would go to Southampton though so there might be something in this, but its doubtful.

  13. jean lu pooty Says:

so if he becomes a talent we get first crack or if we want him we get him no ifs ands or buts ?
and i am unsure of how walcotts experience is comparable outside he was with soton until we bought him. was there some sorta deal with him prior to moving?

  14. JamJam Says:

    i agree wiv JS

  15. Francis Says:

It’s one guy, saying he knew the family of Morgan Schneiderlin, who talk about that. I’m not sure it’s true then he was ready to sign at Portsmouth before signing in Southampton, so as we have nice relations with Pompey (Adams, Redknapp), it would had been better for such a deal!

Wenger is knowing Morgan since a long time then the coach has a lot of friends in Strasbourg.
Morgan was also linked with Chelsea since he was 16.

  16. Gooner Chris Says:

    Thanks for the info Francis.

  17. Sad Arse Says:

Why don’t Arsenal EVER try and develop ENGLISH talent, they are supposed to be one of the great names in ENGLISH football.

Herbert Chapman must be spinning in his grave.

  18. Gunner4life&beyond Says:

    Can’t be right.

  19. Anonymous Says:

Looks like Sad Arse is exactly what his/her name says!

  20. Gunner4life&beyond Says:

    Sad Arse is a dick.
Walcott, Bentley, Pennant, Sidwell, Muamba, Randall, Hoyte, and probably others are all recent ENGLISH players who play for Arsenal, or are playing regularly for other teams, after having been at ARSENAL.
People shouldn’t express an opinion about things they know NOTHING about. Prat.

  21. Thing is, Wenger doesn’t normally let his really good players out on loan at all. Think Walcott, Wilshire, Ramsey Cesc, Denilson, Traore, Clichy, etc. The ones who go on loan are dicey or agitate for one themselves. I fail to see why Wenger would bother to arrange a deal with Southampton over this kid if he didn’t rate him enough to bring him to Arsenal.

  22. Dainowel Says:

I think you Arsenal fans are halfway up your own arses I really do.

Has it occurred to you that Southampton actually do have one of the best academies in the UK and that is why Morgan has joined them.

Expect to see Saints back in the top flight before very long.

  23. London Saint Says:

There could be a “Gentlemens agreement” between the two clubs i.e. give the lad experience (if he’s good enough to earn a first team place) see how he copes in a more physical environment and assess the situation at the end of say two full seasons. Arsenal then pay Southampton a fee to cover what Southampton have invested in the player………just a thought.

On the other hand what happens if he turns out to be a flop? Although reports do suggest that Saints initial outlay isn’t anywhere near the £1.5m being quoted by some sources, it is more likely to be rising to £1.5m dependant on certian factors, which isn’t a lot in this market. If he has two really good seasons in the CCC his market value could be well in excess of this figure!! Saints therefore pay the full £1.5m and could then command a much higher figure from Arsenal, that way Saints don’t lose out and Arsenal get a well developed player!!

  24. Goblin King Says:

    Hello guys, first post time.
The Bischoff situation reminds me of Wenger’s first signing. An unknown frenchman playing in AC Milan’s reserves. Can’t remember his name, I guess he never made it too….
If Wenger’s eye for an uncut gem falls favourably then who are we to be confused. I wouldn’t have thought a lower league french team to supply us with the best Left Back this season either.

  25. Saint Nev Says:

The fee for this chap is a potential 1.5 million euros. Unless there is something in it for Saints i can’t see a clause having been set in his contract setting a date for a move to Arsenal, unless this was the grounds that he signed -although i’d imagine its more informal with the Walcott case being cited as a likely outcome…. i guess they would have also used the threat of selling hime to Spurs if he turns out to be a leming !!
