Villa’s Price Tag Takes A Massive Drop

June 3, 2008

La Liga side Valencia have sparked a Premiership race for striker David Villa after Spanish newspaper AS reported that the Spaniard’s price tag has dropped massively.

The well known Spanish paper says Villa is officially on the market for a knockdown fee of £17 million – which is an enormous climbdown from the £30 million Premiership clubs were quoted last year.

Valencia have informed Villa’s agent, Jose Luis Tamargo who has permission to listen to offers for the striker with the ‘top four’ clubs heavily linked with the striker regarded as one of the best in Europe.

With Valencia’s high wage bill and no Champions League football next season, they may look to sell off the likes of star players such as Villa and David Silva.

Just a month ago, Villa admitted he had ambitions of playing for Arsenal in the future. Arséne Wenger was quick to thank the forward for his ‘claims’ but made it clear that he has no interest in buying a striker in the summer transfer window.

News Round-Up

Goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has left Arsenal for Bundesliga side Vfb Stuttgart, the German international is set to take up their no 1. goalkeeping spot for next season.

Another player leaving the club is starting to look like Alex Hleb, Barca are expected to complete a move for the 27-year-old in the next week or so.

Finally, Cardiff City have received offers from 3 Premier League clubs for Welsh star Aaron Ramsey, two of whom are supposedly Man United and Arsenal, expect more info to come out of this in the coming days.

It is generally assumed that at least one of Valencia’s ‘big name’ players will be sold off over the summer in order to ease their financial difficulties and it seems as if that player could be Villa.

They have not officially transfer-listed the striker, but Valencia are ready to listen to offers, although their €40million request may be a little unrealistic at this point in time.

A number of clubs are reported to be preparing bids in the region of €25million for Villa, but this is not a figure at which Valencia would be willing to part company with ‘el Guaje’.

Villa has indicated that he doesn’t wish to discuss his future until after Euro 2008, and Valencia will be hopeful that a good tournament for him would see his market value rise closer to their own valuation.

The future of Villa was one of a number of subjects that new Valencia coach Unai Emery and his assistant Juan Carlos Carcedo discussed with the club’s technical staff as the pair turned up for their first official day of work in charge of Los Che.

They had a two and a half hour meeting with the technical staff, before also conversing at length with head of medical services Antonio Giner and doctor Frasquet and they begin their plans for next season.

  8. Neonlight Says:

you need to quit football manager.

wenger knows what he’s doing. impatient armchair fans(if you even reach that level); you’re all as bad as chelski.

  17. Someone with a Memory Says:

Real Madrid offered 24m euros before they decided to go the hog for C.Ronaldo.

They were planning to buy Hleb and Villa. Wake up Arsene he is exactly what we need.

Those who think we need a defender are living in Lala land. It doesn’t matter who we buy they will look shit. We play in such a open way that we have to score more than the opposition to win.

  18. gooner me Says:

i think we need villa even if we had 22 strikers,we could score twice more goals if we had him this year even if adebayor was great also eduardo .he is way to good to not want him.you will see if he comes in england and than you will say just like in torres case why dindt we made big transfers etc,not you persionaly but people in generaly.

  19. naysayer Says:

Naysayer, if you have nothing good to say other than insult valued commenters of the blog I suggest you fuck off and criticise/insult someone else.

  26. Franny Says:

I’ve heard that Adebayor is well hung and went through a barren spell in front of goal because he was recently circumsized. Is there any truth in this story?

  27. naysayer Says:

The way I see it, personally, is that the “class of Wenger” are about to rise up through the youth teams and the reserve teams; as such, we are about to witness a new breed of football. Young, dynamic, attuned to the needs of each other. What are we saying, buying Villa or Makoun – it will say to young players that we are not offering anything new, that we are transforming ourselves into another Tottenham, Real or Chelsea. Young players that we have will leave for opportune at the next self-styled Arsenal, and the young players who we should be attracting – like Cesc, Merida, Denilson, Song, Clichy, Bendter, Barazite (the list goes on) – will pass on the chance to sign for us, as we are no longer UNIQUE in the world of youth development.

Primarily, that is what you miss when you make such short-sighted articles. It is ridiculous that we should even consider we are capable or worthy of critiquing those who are trained and experienced in the world of football.

  28. gooner me Says:

so if they cant win anything for 3 years then leave.

  29. JamJam Says:

I dont think thats true Franny but it could be you never know. even though getting circumcisedat 24 is just weird aint it lol

    Chelsea Agree Deal With Ancelotti

Ancelotti has been strongly linked with taking over at Chelsea ever since the sacking of Avram Grant just under a fortnight ago.

Sky Sports News claims that the Milan coach’s representatives held talks with Chelsea officials this afternoon which resulted in an agreement for him to move to West London.

Now all that remains is for Ancelotti to give his final go-ahead to the deal, and for the Blues to agree a compensation package with Milan.

This all follows reports in the Italian media that Ancelotti met with Roman Abramovich in Paris last night at the Four Seasons George V hotel near the Eiffel Tower, where the Chelsea owner offered the Italian a four-year contract.

The meeting was long and thorough, and the Russian billionaire offered Carletto 7.2 million Euros net per year, as well as 100 million Euros to invest immediately on transfers, with the first target being Kaka.

Assistant coach to Ancelotti will reportedly be former Chelsea playing legend Gianfranco Zola, who is currently working with the Italy Under-21 national team.

Milan Vice President Adriano Galliani has admitted that Ancelotti was in Paris last night but denied it was to have talks with Abramovich.

“I spoke with Ancelotti. He was in Paris, but not to meet Abramovich. He was in Paris for business,” said the transfer guru.

Whatever the exact truth, it certainly seems that Chelsea are homing on their new manager.
will kaka folow him?because there is knowd that abramovich wants him

  34. naysayer Says:

Where is ‘Free Speech’ on here??? Bizarre. Criticise Wenger, but don’t allow criticism of yourself? Shame on the moderator.

As for more knowledge than me, I severely doubt that based on this article. How much success has Wenger bought this club? He has transformed it with his ability and vision.

  35. joetodd Says:

I’ve never criticised Wenger, neither has the moderator.. Look your starting arguments on the internet, jog on.

  36. Gooner Chris Says:

Noooo, criticism is welcome, you weren’t criticising, you were insulting me and my blog.

DONT BELIEVE THIS RUBBISH. The author of this article has less knowledge than a cleaner at the Emirates. ITS ALL SUPPOSITION AND PRESUMPTION!

That isn’t criticism, if you have any comments or complaints e-mail me.

  37. Gooner Chris Says:

Hmmmmm, also interesting how you accuse me of criticising Wenger, where did I do that?

  38. Danish Gooner Says:

But it is a tragedy that we cant afford to pay 17 mil for a class striker like Villa. The amount off the transfer wont even have to be paid up straight away. The clubs on the continent usually accept it to be paid off in 3 or 4 years that is less then 5 mil a year even with interest.Especially because he himself would like to play for us.

  39. Gunner Jillu Says:

transfer speculation gone down on the Arsenal, think the lack of signings hve caused the papers give up guessing, which is a good thing

  40. naysayer Says:

no, a tragedy is the Darfur genocide. Let’s keep things in perspective.

  41. Gunner Jillu Says:

only a recent blogger on your ste Chris but is it usuall as hostile or is this Nasri thing getting to everyone

  42. Gooner Chris Says:

I guess its the recent issues with the club mate, so many fans are getting on each other backs, i’ve seen it with a couple of blogs now.

  43. dan Says:

actually its more like 5 million a year plus minimum 5 million a year wages, so 40 million over the course of a 4 year contract, and where would he fit in exactly? who would we sell? we have 5 players in the 1st team squad who are mainly forwards, ade, nik, ed , rvp and vela, plus walcot who could play there if we need, not to mention promising players like murphy simpson and barazite in the reserves….

5/6 strikers into 2 places barely goes as it is (if were not playing 4.5.1) ade and probably rvp if he survives the euros will be first choice with nik and ed (if hes fit, if not then vela) as backups with a combination of vela walcott murphy barazite etc there in the carling cups, you can only have so many good players on the bench.

  44. Gunner Jillu Says:

yeh, its like this, you starve for ages, you get told you will be having a full roast this sunday and you turn up and no one there. Bit like Arsenal fans and transfers

  45. Gooner Chris Says:

    Spot on Jillu mate.

  46. joetodd Says:

If so Gunner Jillu, Chelsea are fat fucks

  47. Gooner Chris Says:

    haha.

    Very true. :8

  48. duck Says:

simple, if we sign villa, we get to sell one of our strikers whom are already a proven product. Who should he be?

Adebayor – if he had not made so many blunders in front of goal, we could have been champions. I said COULD, and not MUST.

Eduardo – Given the same amount of games as Adebayor, he could have easily had more goals. However, his injury may change his career, which i hope not. And really it would be unjust to sell him due to a possibble career changing injury.

RVP – lethal when fit, but only when he’s fit and he never was for much.

Bendtner – Good score ratio, there are offers but decides to stay even when others wants to leave. Loyal.

Walcott – Turning into a fantastic player. No way leaving.

Vela – would have been sold instead of bringing him back from La Liga. No way.

Given a choice, its either Ade or RVP.

  49. Shingo 'Seabass' Takatsuka Says:

The well-respected Spanish paper (stopped reading after that)

AS and Marca are worse than NOTW

  50. Gooner Chris Says:

A lot of their info is right, some wrong as well. I changed it though as maybe “respected” was going a bit too far.

  51. Yardie Says:

Selling Ade makes little sense to me,there is evry chance he will improve his game, as for RVP, yes over the last two season’s he has been unlucky with injuries, but when fit he has awesome potential and I believe we should persevere with him.

  52. Tristan Says:

    Very well Said Jillu ;)

  53. Joe Says:

    http://thearsenaldaily.blogspot.com/

Just started it, need some traffic, and some feedback …

    cheers

  54. dan Says:

yes all those 30 blunders, what a terrible waste of 3million! at least if wed brought a big name like shevchenko for 20 – 30 million then hed have put away at least twice a many as that useless lump adebayor! would bother trying to put that reasonably but the people who think ade did bad leading the frontline mainly on his own without a regular strike partner and almost unrested bagging 30 goals are never going to see sense so i will just say your talking a fat load of arse

his opta stats are up there with the best his chance conversion is comparable to any striker in the league, he was in the players team of the season, he was 2nd or 3rd top league scorer , every top defender has said hes the player they hate playing against, barca and milan were sniffing around

but of course they are all wrong and your the only people who werent blinkered and could see the truth that ade was in fact crap and all the goals and praise and awards were just a big mirage

selling ade would be a joke and the only other way we could make a bigger statement of no ambition would be to sell fabregas.

as for rvp, hes been injured fairly badly for 2 or 3 years but we all know what he can do, and itsnot like sayshearer with repeat knee injurys or rosicky / owens hamstrings, it is actually just appalling luck and maybe something like an awkward way of falling as all the injurys are separate things: broken metatarsal, could and has happened to anyone (becks, cole, clichy rooney etc) awkward fall that twisted his knee this year, same thing happened to owen kenwyne jones, bullard, dont think its helped the way hes been rushed back, but we gave clichy a fair crack with his injurys and look at the rewards, so surely hes worth keeping for another season or 2 before thinking about getting rid as a crock, hes ridiculously talented and he loves the club and if he can get a run in hed be a first choice on our teamsheet for sure

so really theres no one wed want to sell (if were being sensible) and therefore no room for another striker, if hleb goes we need 2 wingers (or amf who will play as wingers) as we were short there last year and we cant afford to lose another there, and wenger has said hes definetly looking for a defender who can deal with the straight long ball, and thats really all we need,

if we werent as thin on the wings last season hleb or rosicky could have come into the middle to give cesc a rest now and then and we wouldnt see the end of seasondip as fatigue sets in, hes still 20 and needs more of a rest than he gets or hell be constantly breaking down later in his career

  55. dan Says:

or in short, what yardie said lol

  56. gooner me Says:

rvp plays very good on wing also and in my opinion villa will score minimum 30 goals next season if he comes in england, look what torres did ,and villa is much better .

  57. BOY-BETTER-KNOW Says:

does anyone really think a.w will go out and spend 17 million on a striker when he can’y even afford to pay nasri 40 grand a week..

  58. gooner me Says:

i wonder how did arsenal got on third or four in wourld profitable clubs?whitout any trophy won.i think the answer is that it has wonderful fans wich fulls out the stadium even with derby.

  59. BOY-BETTER-KNOW Says:

so there so profitable they cant even pay 40 grand a week to a player that is supposedly going to better us

  60. unfair Says:

We slipped up last season because AW gambled. He only had 3 players who could create and score out of nothing – Rosicky, Eduardo and Van Persie, and they all got injured when they were most needed.

Ade and Cesc can score too but mostly they get on the end of team-moves. But they weren’t scoring any more, and with Diaby, Hleb and Eboue playing behind Ade, it was up to Gallas and Theo and others to pop up with the odd goal. This wasn’t enough to win matches and we lost out.

The only way that we were ever going to win the league was if United slipped up. They did at the start and then a second time – leaving us 5 points ahead.

What many fans seem to be annoyed about is that it would only have taken one player to show a bit of form during the following few games – scoring a few goals, to have made the difference. It could have been a bought player or a Walcott on the right wing or some other bit of magic. But AW doesn’t do magic, he does percentages and building momentum. And stubbornness.

Maybe fans want signings because if we had bought Hargreaves, Nani, Anderson and Tevez, we would have had enough to win it. Though in hindsight Nani and Anderson are horrible.

The thing is Ferguson is desperate, like he has always been, to win every year. AW isn’t – he prefers the building process. It is almost like he is sad to win because it completes some kind of cycle – and that is why we will see Eboue on the right next season because AW always has the time to try to prove he was right all along.

If his job or his reputation were under serious threat, he would stop experimenting. And a desperate manager (like Ancelotti or Sven or someone) would snap up a player like David Villa who offered himself like that.

Maybe he would sit on the bench as Van Persie and Rosicky and Eduardo stayed fit for 60 games, or maybe he could make the difference (4 points).

  61. BOY-BETTER-KNOW Says:

It is almost like he is sad to win because it completes some kind of cycle.WELL IT DONT FUCKIN MAKE ME SAD WHEN WE WIN THE LEAGUE.Enough is enough and its time for a change the board really need to start getting a fucking idea of how the fans feel about all of this and stop being wankers with THE cheque book.?CAN ANY OF YUO PEOPLE TELL ME THE LAST TIME YOU GOT EXCITED ABOUT ARSENAL BRINGING IN A PLAYER WE ALL KNOW BECAUSE I CANT.

  62. Ricky Says:

I do think the board NEED to give wenger a good amount of money this yr & MAKE HIM SPEND IT ALL..
Im not so sure if we’ll need vila with all our strikers but i wouldnt say no & wenger probably wont be playing walcott up front next season anyway..

I really dont belive this info is true & cant really see wenger having more then 40mill to spend & if thats the case then we need to bring in the players most needed so i dont think a striker is priority..

How i think we could spend 40million if thats how much wenger had to spend in the summer.

    Samir nasri 12m
    Micah richards 14m
    Yaya toure 6m
Maruo zarate 8m (who i belive looked top class for brum at the end of last season & can also be a good impact player to bring on when opposition is tiering.. like walcott can do or what solskjaer used to do for united)

We probably wont spend nowhere near the 40m mark but think we may need to if we wanna make improvments on last season.

WICH MEAN WINNING SOMTHING & NOT COMMING CLOSE….

  63. BOY-BETTER-KNOW Says:

winning something coming close is just not good enough

  64. duck Says:

I don’t see how Micah Richards is worth 14 mil.

  65. newby Says:

duck please seek medical help urgently :-)
Richards is a quality defender and has more than a decade of football left in him. If he plays for 14 years thats like signing him every year for £1m – well worth it!
Unfortunately it won’t happen but I would love to see him come to the gunners!

  66. DeiseGooner Says:

We wont get Villa but i reckon David Silva would be a cracking player for us. Winger comfortable on both flanks.

  67. gooner me Says:

North London neighbours Arsenal and Tottenham are set to go head to head in a bid to sign Valencia striker David Villa. The Spain international has been made available for around £17m. – Daily Telegraph
if its truethen totthenham has no chance

  68. BOY-BETTER-KNOW Says:

yessss arsenal have made a signing

  69. BOY-BETTER-KNOW Says:

    we signed backary sagna again

  70. DeiseGooner Says:

    Great signing that

  71. Ricky Says:

hooraaaaaaay!!!! thats it then, wengers done all his summer signings & is ready for next season… looool

  72. AbnetArsenal Says:

    where is pedro chiris

  73. BOY-BETTER-KNOW Says:

it has been officialy posted on arsenal.com people

  74. Matt Says:

We have to take this opportunity

  75. duck Says:

Newby, the thing is you can get a quality defender like Micah from another league a lot cheaper. Why pay so much just because he is English? seriously, had Arsenal been buying more English players, the club will probably end up with signing just one average player per transfer window.

There are good English players, thats no doubt about it. The only problem is the price.

  76. Ricky Says:

Its true what your saying in a way BUT with the new 6+5 rule comming soon i think its best to start preparing now.
i dont think theres a better cheaper defender then micah richards in another leauge unless you can ind us one.. plus i think we should be looking to bring in a good english CB anyway as i fell thats what were missing at the back & not only because his english also because he understands what it means to be playing in that role for a team like ours

I cant speak for every arsenal fan but i think 14m would be a bargain for a powerfull CB like richards considering his only young & also has a few international caps under his belt & another bonus is that he is also a arsenal fan…

What more can you ask for in a player??

  77. 100% Gooner Says:

6+5 rule will never pass with the EU.
