Mathieu Flamini will not be playing Champions League football for AC Milan next season, after his new club missed out on fourth spot to Italian underdogs Fiorentina.
A stunning Daniel Pablo Osvaldo overhead kick sent Fiorentina into the Champions League for the first time in eight years.
Fourth place was in the balance for Milan, but the Rossoneri had done themselves a lot of damage last week by losing at Napoli to see Fiorentina overtake them and go two points clear. To achieve a Champions League preliminary round spot they had to beat Udinese and hope the Viola stumbled away to already-safe Torino.
Handily, Udinese were in the UEFA Cup and for some weeks had seemed on holiday anyway, but were eager for revenge after Alberto Gilardino’s stoppage-time winner at the Friuli earlier this season. Alessandro Nesta and Gennaro Gattuso were suspended, while Marcos Cafu and Serginho said their goodbyes to San Siro.
Goals from Pato, Inzaghi, Cafu and Clarence Seedorf secured all three points but in the end, it was too little, too late for Milan and Flamini will be playing his football in the ’smaller’ competition of the UEFA Cup next season.

May 18, 2008 at 3:51 pm
What a nice result, just what I was hoping for, and a clear indication that the grass is not always greener. I would’ve thought us beating them at the san siro would convince any Arsenal player not to go there, but oh well. Good luck in the Uefa cup Flamilan, aka the lying villain, group stage knockout maybe?
May 18, 2008 at 3:52 pm
Oh dear! Looks as though something has come back and bit Matty on the arse hahahaha
May 18, 2008 at 3:53 pm
haha in ur face flamini u prick!
May 18, 2008 at 3:54 pm
He’s stupid for leaving, and has got what he deserved for not swallowing his pride. That said, we’re stupid for getting in this situation where one of our players can do this AGAIN.
I think it’s a real shame actually. Regardless of who we buy, our team will be unnecessarily weakended until the replacement (from within or not) gets up to speed and used to playing with Cesc.
Flamini leaving was so unnecessary – just as with Edu and Pires before him.
Flamini allowed Cesc and Hleb (and Theo and Rosicky) to play the creative stuff – and would win the ball back quickly and high up the pitch when we lost it.
May 18, 2008 at 3:56 pm
Poor Flamoney………AC wins the most of the champions in the past ? and you wanted to get the taste of being champions ? you could be the champions of UEFA Cup now……next year. so happy for you.
May 18, 2008 at 3:58 pm

May 18, 2008 at 4:01 pm

May 18, 2008 at 4:13 pm
All I’m going to say now, is that I hope to God we qualify for the champions league. Put out your best team Arsene and make sure of qualification, then go on to the final again. Come on you Gooners!
May 18, 2008 at 4:16 pm
I took great joy in seeing them relegated after Martin Taylor’s leg-breaker on Eduardo.
UEFA Cup is about the right level for Flamini.
May 18, 2008 at 4:17 pm
Congratulations Mathieu FlaMoney for playing in UEFA CUP!! that’s what u deserved for leaving Arsenal. I hope that AC Milan will knocked out on UEFA CUP group stage so we’ll see what is his excuse. I want him to regret for leaving arsenal.
May 18, 2008 at 4:21 pm

May 18, 2008 at 4:32 pm
haha. Everyone wishing Flamoney well eh?
May 18, 2008 at 4:34 pm
he went to a ‘bigger club’ to achieve a “bigger” goal which Arsenal seldom or “rather have no chance to” enter the UEFA CUP.LOL maybe that’s the reason y Arsenal wasn’t able to hold onto him
from stats any player leaving arsenal with an excuse for “bigger” goal or money didnt make it in the end.HAHAHA they deserve it.
May 18, 2008 at 4:37 pm
Now he has joined AC Milan where they have to earn their honours. The days of corruption and match fixing are in the past. Mathieu has made his choice and will have to live with it. Kaka and any decent players won’t be seen for dust now. All you have to do Mathieu is suffer four years and heyho another Bosman.
May 18, 2008 at 5:00 pm
A smile, yeah, maybe even a ha, ha, ha, too. I waited upon this result almost vindictively. Why would he assume he would be playing champions league football next year, especially with the points spread so razor thin and the game too be played so highly contested? Perhaps the same arrogance that wanted Arsenal to break the bank for him, or maybe a bad translation from the Italian a to the French of EUFA CUP to EUFA CL. Anyway, what’s the old saying–we lost with you, we can lose without you? I don’t think that is the case for the Gunners; they did not lose with him, they came a remarkable close third in light of the relatively thin squad that they ha and their injures to key players, all of which, let’s face it, came together with their brutally horrible loss of Eduardo, who was on such a fine string form, and, I think had an enormous effect upon the team, and not Gallas’ response to the “loss” at Birmingham—Eduardo and the last minute penalty were as good as a loss; oh how glad I am that they went down– which has been grossly exaggerated in the press and the equally parroting blogs. The short of it is that the Gunners can imrove on Flamini’s absence if Wenger spends and co-ordinates his new forces wisely, which we know that he can do. The point is, as well as he played, Flamini is not indispensable. my tip is to put Kolo there, but that’s me talking.
Despite the disappointment of being so high and so close for so long, we got above the expectations we should have had, and Flamini’s excellence was apart of that exaggerated expectation. No trophies, but we had a fine season. Finally, if Hleb goes, I am not bothered; there are others to replace him (hopefully not Diaby). As unique as his two-footedness is, getting the left balance right in midfield, and that extra defender–Vincent Kompany would be a great addition, at whatever cost– or two that we genuinely need. We have some fine players in waiting, and the coming of Vela, hopefully the wellness of Van Persie and Rosicsky (a far more intelligent player than Hleb, and someone who is more likely to score goals); the rapid improvement of Theo and Bendtner (his first season, remember), the eventual maturation of Denilson, among others, the possible addition of Zarate, and even the inclusion of some of they younger players from our own system, will make for a deeper, exciting squad. We will be cooler, but we will replenish and hopefully harden the squad in ways that will not just win (remember we only lost three league games and dubious penalty losses over two legs in the CL; for get about the other competitions) be more sustaining and winning. There’s always next year, and it will be ours.
May 18, 2008 at 5:08 pm
Have we signed Samir Nasri gooner chris?

Reports in France this evening suggest that Olympique Marseille midfielder Samir Nasri has agreed a €17.5 million deal with Arsenal which would see the Frenchman come for around 13.5 million pounds.
As we reported yesterday, Nasri announced to French Television cameras that his game against RC Strasbourg could be his last, and reports today suggest that a deal has already been struck between the two clubs.
The 20-year-old is a talented midfielder who can play on either wing, famous for his feint’s and pure creativity, Samir has been likened to Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo.
Local Marseille newspaper La Provence reported this evening that both OM and Arsenal have agreed a deal which will become official in the next few weeks.
