Rumours that Hamburg centre back Vincent Kompany is making a summer move to Arsenal have escalated this evening, after being left on the bench during his team’s 7-0 thrashing of Karlsruhe SC in HSV’s final Bundesliga game of the season.
The 22 year old 6 ft 3 giant is rated at around £15 million and would prove to be a fantastic addition to Arséne Wenger’s side with his tough tackling, forceful runs and top leadership qualities.
Kompany told local Hamburg newspaper Hamburger Morgenpost a fortnight ago that he will “keep quiet” over a possible move to another European side after doing the same whilst at former club Anderlecht; a move which forced his transfer to present club Hamburg.
Translation From Setanta Sports:
“I have nothing to say,” said Kompany.
“I am sure that I will not say anything about this, I learned in Anderlecht that it is better [to keep quiet] – otherwise I will regret it.”
The Belgium international has seen the last two seasons at Hamburg interrupted by injury, but he is still considered to be one of the most promising young defenders and would find no shortage of takers should he become available.

6ft 3, extremely powerful athletic centre back – just what we need in conjunction with a quick, mobile mopper upper (Toure or Gallas) then stick Song alongside Fab in the middle !!
May 17, 2008 at 5:00 pm
Yep, he would be such an asset if he came here. His injury problems are a downer, but I really do rate Kompany, probably more than I do Gallas!
May 17, 2008 at 5:10 pm
hope we do buy Kompany hes quality
May 17, 2008 at 5:14 pm
He was left on the bench because he was horrible on the last match Cottbus, and to make a matters worse for him, his best friend died in a car accident a week earlier.
His injury has turned him from one of the most sought after talent to a run of the mill defender. His back injury is almost incurable, will plague his career for a long time.
I will be very surprise if he joined us. Looks to me there’s nothing left for him to offer apart from lengthy period at the physio’s room.
May 17, 2008 at 5:18 pm
Gallas is an outstanding defender. Lacking as a captain, but terrific central defender.
May 17, 2008 at 5:18 pm
Thanks for the info mate.
He should of been omitted from the whole squad together if that was the case IMO.
May 17, 2008 at 5:22 pm
Sorry we don’t need any more sick notes!!!
May 17, 2008 at 5:22 pm
do we really need another player who is injury prone? we already have van persie and rosicky. i would much prefer raul albiol or christopher samba over kompany.

Here, you can read the news linking Kompany to us from a German media Bild. The title read “Arsenal jagt Katastrophen-Kompany” which means “Arsenal tracking catastrophic Kompany”.

Cheers mate
True, we don’t need another injury prone player. But when this guy is at his best, not even the worlds best striker can beat him.
May 17, 2008 at 6:39 pm
Makes too much sense which is why we wont sign him, probably get sum 17 year old from ouiter mongolia for 45,000 and a bus ticket home.
May 17, 2008 at 6:44 pm
haha.
Wenger has promised he’ll get a mix of big names and youngsters in, i’ll be extremely disappointed if he doesn’t live up to that promise.
May 17, 2008 at 7:40 pm
I don’t like the new advert on telly where Manure run circles around us ! Anyone else find it slightly upsetting ?
May 17, 2008 at 7:49 pm
It should be Ade striking that ball in the net instead of Ronaldo..
May 17, 2008 at 7:53 pm
Or Ade striking Ronaldo in the balls !!
May 17, 2008 at 8:04 pm
hahahahahaha
May 17, 2008 at 8:17 pm
Kompany is just class, i once had a dream that he got Ronaldo and Rooney sent off at old trafford and we went on to win 0-3. stick him with Sagna, M Richards and Clichy. we’d be unstoppable babbiiiii.
Arsenal 4 eva
Cesc Fabregas is DYNAMITE
May 17, 2008 at 8:19 pm
ARSENAL will get Kompany, richards, nasri, ben arfa and villa. gallas, toure, eboue and hleb must go noooww
Arsenal 4 life
May 17, 2008 at 8:19 pm
What a dream
Let’s think realistically though, we’re only likely to get a couple of top, top expensive stars in, Micah Richards is a Gooner, but seems pretty committed to City..
May 17, 2008 at 8:30 pm
I want a tall powerful CB who can snap Crouch in 2. Think Richards may be too short (and expensive) although he certainly has the power and a good leap. Dunn may be a decent stop gap. look what happened to City when he came off !! He’ll be cheap and lots of experience and leadership ?
May 17, 2008 at 8:34 pm
Dunne wont do.He will be murdered in the cl.
May 17, 2008 at 8:39 pm
Disagree with you there DanishGooner. Dunne coped amazingly well against Torres a couple of weeks ago, he was clearing and tackling everything that came at him.
Newcastle have been strongly linked with a move for Dunne, he will fit in well there with the style of football played as well.
May 17, 2008 at 8:40 pm
Maybe in the CL but he will give us other options in the Prem depending on who we are up against.
May 17, 2008 at 8:43 pm
How many of you have actually seen him play???? He is not that good. He is overrated because he is good in FM.
May 17, 2008 at 8:45 pm
I have seen him play on many occasions particuarly for Anderlecht in the UEFA Cup.
And in last year’s Bundesliga run HSV were contenders to win the league, Kompany was a vital player in their tight run in.
May 17, 2008 at 8:50 pm
i seriously doubt wenger will pay 15m for a defender, doesnt seem like something he would do. but you never know, after this season he has said that we’ve lacked the experience to win some games. so maybe he will buy a new center back… we need a materazzi!
May 17, 2008 at 8:53 pm
haha Materazzi??????
No thanks! So inconsistent and he’s getting on a bit!
May 17, 2008 at 9:24 pm
song centre mid
ur havin a laugh
May 17, 2008 at 9:31 pm
He was brilliant in the ACN and Flam needed agood run in CM before he shone !
May 17, 2008 at 9:34 pm
Song is underated IMO. He’s more than likely to claim a centre mid spot next season.
May 17, 2008 at 9:45 pm
I have a feeling that he will surprise us all !! In a good way that is.
May 17, 2008 at 9:46 pm
Definitely
May 17, 2008 at 9:59 pm
Answer to Ishtar
The reason of the horrible end season of Kompany is just be cause his mother died 1 month ago…
The guy who died in a car crash was not a close friend, just a colleague in the National Team (top scorer in 2006/07 in Belgium).
Concerning his skills, Kompany is strong but he is not Gallas, anyway he’s much more brillant with the ball than any defender in the Premier League.
He can play in the middle of the defense or on the right. In a recent past, Cruyf wanted to have it in Barcelona …for a place of midfielder.
Now, I didn’t follow his last season, I just say that 15 million is probably too much, especially because there are better players for less: Marouane Fellaini (20 y.old) (see Standard de Liege)
a monster.
May 17, 2008 at 10:08 pm
Thanks for the correction mate, It seems strange that he was dropped don’t you think?
May 17, 2008 at 10:10 pm
What’s wrong with his back, ishtar? You said it’s a chronic problem?
May 17, 2008 at 11:20 pm
His back is an issue, his whole physique. I wouldn’t call it a chronic problem though, he’s just very injury prone, I guess that’s because: one: he demands a lot of himself physically, and maybe he hasn’t had the right guiding on that field. And second: he takes a lot of risks in his game and his agility works against him in that matter.
I must say however, i’ve read some bullshit reactions here.
Indeed by Ishtar (for instance: he hardly even knew the player that crashed) but also by Incal: How on earth do you even dare comparing Fellaini with Kompany?
Fellaini is a beast in midfield, i agree. He’s incredbly strong and almost unbeatable in the air. But no flair, no vista and certainly not the intelligence of Kompany. Fellaini is a “dirty” player. He uses his elbows more than his feet. And I won’t even start comparing their technical skills.
Arsenal is probably the best choice Kompany can make right now.
A wonderful player for a wonderful club.
p.s.: Chris Gooner: I don’t think Kompany played in the UEFA Cup for Anderlecht. he did play against celtic, chelsea, lyon, betis sevilla and many other great teams in the Champions League with Anderlecht.
May 17, 2008 at 11:23 pm
*Champions League.. correction.
May 17, 2008 at 11:32 pm
He’ll certainly be in good Kompany at Arsenal !! with that I’ll bid you fellow gooners goodnight….
May 17, 2008 at 11:35 pm
Kompany is a great defender, by far the best defender we had for ages.
He’s used on the midfield because of his attacking skills but imo he plays the best as a central defender.
He had a great start at Hamburg and became one of the fans favourite.
After the dead of his mother it has been going a little bad for him, but once his head is clear again he will be brilliant.
May 17, 2008 at 11:38 pm
Night Chrissie.
Cheers for the video [T]-Mo
May 18, 2008 at 12:04 am
This is for all those people who think they know Kompany: Kompany had just bad luck last two years, first he had the shoulder injury, which is now completely healed. Than he had the achilles injury, also healed. Don’t forget that he played the first two seasons in Anderlecht without any injury, according to me and it’s not only my opinion, it’s the medical staff of Hamburg which is not as good as for example the one in Anderlecht, AC Milan is the best example, they have the best Medical staff in the world, see this link for more info: http://www.worldchiropracticalliance.org/tcj/2006/nov/k.htm . Kompany is not as injuryprone as you think. And as said above, he had a lot of mental issues with the death of his mother, they had a VERY good relation, and what would you do when you’re mother died when you were only 21 years old. It’s allways difficult, and football is not a game/job to say I’ll play, and stay focused for only 50%. If he goes to Arsenal and I hopes so, He’ll be a great player. His flair, elegance, intelligence, technique, marking, tackeling, passing, … is really phenomenal, he’s one of those players where people come for to see football. And about Fellainin, he’s a stong player, he’s good, but you can’t compare them, two completely different players.
May 18, 2008 at 2:56 am
How does sitting him on the bench = link with Arsenal?
May 18, 2008 at 8:32 am
forget kompany we should buy some one like nesta who plays for ac milan. but kompaany will be a good signing
May 18, 2008 at 9:26 am
Just had a word with AW said something about picking up 2 players at the airport for a press conference, pestered him for names – was tight lipped.. I hope its Kompany and Ben Arfa

Now admittedly Bild is the German equivalent of the Sun but it does say that Kompany has been crap throughout the season and responsible for most of their defensive errors.
Interesting to hear some of you making injury excuses for him….I wonder whether you’d make the same excuses for Senderos….they are equally applicable!! By the sounds of things, Senderos has made fewer errors in spite of playing in a far more difficult league.
Now, as I say, Bild isn’t reliable and we know that if AW is buying, he will have been closely monitored so I guess we can trust his judgement. But perhaps the key quote is where they say that there has been no contact from Arsenal. Much ado about nothing?!
May 18, 2008 at 1:31 pm
Another ageing centre back. Why do we want him?!
May 18, 2008 at 3:32 pm
no AC milan in CL …mathieu best wishes mate…
May 18, 2008 at 4:03 pm
Kompany plays central midfielder in HSV…
May 18, 2008 at 4:07 pm
Like I said, he’s a versatile player, he’s played both centre back & centre midfielder for HSV this season.
May 18, 2008 at 8:59 pm
As a Belgian supporter of Arsenal i would love to see Kompany in the Arsenal colours…. At the moment he’s mind is not on the game, that’s true butt i think that a trainer like Wenger can get into young players mind and lead them to their best form. And lead Arsenal to be premier league champions in 2009. I hope they close the tranfer this week, because 25 may i’m going to London. It would be great to already get a shirt from Vinnie Kompany.
Big Arsenal support 4 ever from Belgium.
May 19, 2008 at 2:07 pm
Remember we only have 25mil that is enough for only 2 quality players, so that means we will have to sell to bring in more. I personally would love another quality Goalie, CB & a DM someone like Yaya if not then forget it. Hleb is not leaving, Nasri & Ben Arfa are not coming to Arsenal. If we expect these kind of quality players lets sell the Club to the Russian guy. This team is so close we just need to replace Flamini and add some Defensive quality thats all. Everyone loves a Rolls Royce but not everyone can afford one so please lets stop dreaming and lets be realistic. Since when has Wenger bought us a known player.???????
May 19, 2008 at 3:47 pm
I read somewhere apparently we have 50m to spend but any increases in wages would have to come out of that.
Kompany/Samir Nasri would do me,not really sure we need a central midfielder – what’s going on with D’arby ? it’s about time Wenger gave him a run in the middle, also looks like Gilberto might still be with us next season & on top of all that we have Song who would provide excellent cover in midfield ?
Ben Arfa as well as Nasri would be awesome, would free up Walcott to take on a more advanced role – can but dream !
May 19, 2008 at 4:14 pm
Kompanys been falling apart for the last 18 months.. much prefer Dunne, hes jus what arsenal need a pure stopper, out and out defender, no nonsanse.. be good for a couple of years. I think Nasris already an arsenal player.. which means hlebs gone, which i have to say im disapointed at. Ben Afra maybe? but i think holding midfielder will be next on Arsene’s shopping list, a giant powerful quick french african no doubt!!!
May 19, 2008 at 4:17 pm
Ohhh and Flamini enjoy playing against the spuds in the uefa cup next year!!!!
May 19, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Yeah i kinda agree with you, maybe we have almost too much flair/talent & need a hard headed, mentally strong player or two to hold things together..see that’s my point i thought D’Arby was going to be molded into the ‘next Viera’ but all Wenger’s done is stick him out on the wing all year when he’s clearly not comfortable there.
May 24, 2008 at 4:19 pm
What a top quality defender. I think i could leave it at that but there are so many more superlatives i can throw at this guy, i watch the Bundesliga quite often and i dont beleive ive ever seen such a young defender as physically strong as him, but with his size obviously comes aerial dominance at no cost of pace. A towering figure who I’d love to see at the hear of our defence next season. Sorry but id sit Bill on the bench for it.
July 6, 2008 at 5:45 pm
Indeed, Kompany would be an amazing addition to the squad and would surely force Senderos out the club.
